The FAQ: Q. I have an old PowerBook, and I want to use its screen as a monitor. Can I? A. No, not cheaply. PowerBook screens need digital signals, and most video cards output analog signals. No amount of wire splicing will change that. You?d need to find an analog-to-digital video converter, with would cost more than a decent flat-panel LCD monitor. Q. But if I connect these two pins together, and? A. No. Don?t even think about it. Sell the working parts on eBay and save up for a real LCD monitor. Q. When I start up my Mac, I hear the chime and it seems to power up, but there?s no video. Whassup with that? A. You need a new PRAM battery. Q. The clock on my Mac is always wrong! A. You need a new PRAM battery. Q. AppleTalk keeps reverting to ?Active? and it?s screwing up my network settings! A. You need a new PRAM battery. Q. I think I have a prototype Mac! It has this and this and this missing from the normal models. Is it worth a lot of money? A. It?s probably not a prototype. If you really think it?s special, let?s see some pictures. And no, unless it?s incredibly rare, it?s not worth a whole lot in monetary value. Besides, if you try to sell it on eBay, Apple may get seriously pissed. Q. I?m trying to get this incredibly rare and worthless piece of PC hardware that?s specifically designed for only one purpose to work on the Mac. Where do I get drivers? A. Heh. Good luck finding them. Q. Where do I find drivers for [Mac part]? A. Have you tried the manufacturer?s Web site? Q. Okay, I looked there, and they don?t have them (or the manufacturer is out of business). Where else? A. Try Googling the hell out of the part name. Q. Can I overclock my [incredibly old Mac]? A. Yeah, you probably can, but why? OC?ing a 68030 from 25 to 33MHz isn?t going to do a lot of good, and besides, your system bus will probably be all screwed up from it. Q. How do I take apart my computer? A. Hmm, good one. See those metal things with ?x? or star shapes in the middle of them? They?re called ?screws.? You get a ?screwdriver? and turn them in a counterclockwise direction. The screws come out. Then the part that?s held in by the screw comes loose. Wow! Q. But there aren?t any screws! or It?s a notebook! A. You have two choices. 1) Find a heavy mallet and bludgeon the item until it comes apart, or 2) Google for the service manual. Q. I just got this old Mac. What should I do with it? A. I could make a few suggestions? Q. Why? A. Because the hardware isn?t compatible. Q. Okay, I replaced the PRAM battery to fix my (insert random problem). It still didn?t fix it! A. Hit the motherboard reset button. Q. The what? Where is that? A. On the motherboard, there?s a small pushbutton. Push it. See if your problem went away. Q. I want to modify my Mac?s motherboard in a manner that the components on the board aren?t compatible with. How do I do this? A. Solder away, my friend. Then go buy a new Mac that actually meets your needs. Q. Hey, I disagree with your 'Fritter about discharging CRTs. I think it?s perfectly safe to work around a high-voltage device that can kill you. In fact, I stick forks in electrical sockets all the time? A. All right, fine. I concede. I got too fricking much email about that article. So go ahead and work on your compact Mac without discharging the CRT. I don?t care any more. Do me one favor, though: do all of your Mac hacking before having children. Okay? Q. Why? A. So when you get that fatal jolt you won?t have reproduced, thus keeping your genes from further contaminating the human gene pool.
