Ooops, that was suppose to be $E000-FFFF (8K EEPROM). I'm glad that basic is relocatable, and I'll work on double checking the 4K of code I typed in by hand. I have found some errors and I'll post them in the forum for BASIC.

The final touches are being put on the Replica. Firmware is being upgraded on the video chip and some final touches are being added. I'm going to officially start selling these October 11th but I will take a list of 10 people starting with Applefritter members and I can probably make the first 10 in September . I've spent a lot of time error checking everything and I want a fully 100% compatible Replica with no bugs. I will be assembling them by hand in my garage and I want to test each board fully before shipping. If you are seriously interested in a board, contact me via email. Since the first run of the boards is over $500 I will need $50 each preorder. Already there is talk of a printer interface, and a serial interface. My goal is to be able to preserve the software that was written for the Apple 1 and for owners to once again be able to play their games. I'm still working on Basic but that will happen. I need the proms from the interface to make a cassette interface. I'm willing to give a discount to any Apple 1 owner that can loan me the proms or the interface for a week. I can guarantee no damage will happen. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. Thanks, Vince

| This all sounds great Vince! My question, which may have been answered previously is this... Will you be publishing PCB layouts, parts lists, schematics etc... so that us intrepid builders can attempt our own replica construction? Will the boards you sell be pre-assembled or just a bag of parts and a PCB?

why don't you make a cassette interface adapter that reads from a mini plug jack. Here's what i'm thinking. <Mac/PC>------(miniplug)-------<cassette interface>===<apple1 replica> or after toiling for years with MP3 coding and create a floppy interface. a.k.a., floppy storing MP3s -> Apple1 Replica ?? just my lunch money divided by 100.

Cassette interface is underway now that we know the firmware code is the real thing, (thanks Larry for double checking that.) It will be both compatible with the Apple I and the Replica I. In other words it will be a card like the Apple I cassette interface and will have the connector for the Replica I as well. Kits, schematics, etc.... Schematic publications are underway. I have a very unorthodox way of doing my schematics. I'm in the process of cleanning it up for the web site. Right now more people are concerned that I get the cassette interface finished so first chance I get I'll prototype test a board and see where we stand. The Replica I website here at fritter is at: http://www.applefritter.com/apple1/members/replica1/index.htm I'm offering assembled versions, and kits which you solder together yourself and I was offering a board and chipset for the parts that were hard to get (ie special video IC, keyboard encoder) but I had no requests, so I took that off the listing. If you want to go that route, just email me. Things are looking good for the Replica I and many people have reserved boards all over the world including a collector who has an Apple I. I just hope this sparks interest in the Apple I, we shall see.

this is so cool, but the website is a bit crude, i like making websites, can i make you a new one? and btw, what software does your replica run?, like have you made it like the original Apple BASIC and Apple DOS ??

Yes, if you have access to the tapes. But that isn't so much of a problem now that software is being archieved. When everything gets done, I'll make fresh copies of sound files of the programs that have been restored.

Just a FYI for those that don't know. I'll be showing the Replica I at the VCF for all to try out. Come check it out for yourself. Vince

Vince is now shipping the finished Replica Is. Mine arrived yesterday. I've had time to get everything running and I must say he has done a magnificient job. This unit looks, acts and feels just like the original Apple I. He has included good instructions and some examples of programs. The main difference between the Apple I and the Replica I is the simplicity of the circuitry, due to the tremendous advances in electronics in the last 27 years. Also, the new unit has LOTS more memory, like 8 times as much memory available for programs. (4K of RAM in the original and 32K in the Replica). It's also handy having BASIC in ROM, instead of having to load a 30-second tape everytime the computer was turned on for BASIC to be available. IMHO, if you have any interest in the Apple I, you have to get the Replica. Thanks, Vince! Larry

Vince, I received my Replica I kit the other night... looks like you have done a great job and I can't wait to start soldering. It reminds me of my first Sinclair ZX81 kit back in '82. In eager anticipation of my Replica I, I have started planning two projects. First, I intend to put together a simple program loader with a Basic Stamp that will allow me to download/upload programs to/from the Replica I memory from a PC using a DMA approach, temporarily halting the 6502. No work done here yet, though. Secondly, I have begun the effort to port fig-FORTH 1.1 to the Apple I (Replica I). I currently have the FORTH interpreter producing output in debug mode (on the Pom1 emulator) but have some issues with executing words. As you might imagine, documentation is lacking on the old FORTH source code! Also, time is a rare resource for me right now. Again a great job, and I'll let you know how I progress. Regards, Will Rodiger

Hey guys, thanks for the compliments. Yeah, for those that have been following I've been at the project in my spare time for over a year. Frustration was a big issue but I think the end result will make people happy. While I'm a big fan of emulators I just don't think they give you the same feeling as a hardware replica. And while it may not "look" like an Apple 1, it acts just like one and beside, I never want anyone to confuse my Replica with an actual Apple 1. Since I now have extensive experience building the boards I am always available to help anybody with kits if they run into problems. The packaging of the kits is far less than perfect because it was a last minute request from people. Actually packaging up the kits was almost harder than assembling boards! I'm also glad to hear that projects are starting and people are designing hardware and software for the Replica. As Larry stated "It's good to be using an Apple I again", for many of us, this is a new experience. Integer Basic and Woz's monitor are very simple yet powerful programming tools. Just the fact that he could build a monitor with only 256 bytes is incredible. The VCF was a very well done festival and hats off to all who put it together. The Replica I won 2 first place awards including best Reproduction/Preservation award. I was very honored to receive this and I owe a lot to this forum for support, ideas and a lot of bothering people for information on the functionality of the Apple I. Because of the Apple 1 club, more and more software is being preserved and documented. I hope you all enjoy the Replica I and I plan to finish the cassette interface the first chance I get to really sit down and work with it. I will also post projects for those who wish to build themselves soon too and hope others do the same. Cheers, Vince

Hi everyone, first time poster. I just wanted to let everyone know that Vince is the greatest. My completed Replica I board just arrived and to say the least it is awesome. I need to get a nice board to mount it on. I have a new power supply I got from eBay for a couple of dollars and an Apple II+ parts machine I am going to take the keybord from. I am somewhat new at this so anyone who would like to offer advice please email me at macfan @XXXXrealdsl.com (remove XXXX before using). Thank you Bob K.
