I thought of using a liquid too, and looking at the way the two shells fit together I think it could be done using a 'gasket' around the edge, like a strip of tape or something. Depending on the liquid it could be tough to use glue.
Initially I was thinking of something along the lines of a 'snow-globe' . . . damn nuisance if it leaked, eh?
