PowerBook paintjob

Hey, I'm thinking of painting a PowerBook (similar to the iBook project), but don't really know how to go a bout it.  I'm thinking of doing a PowerBook G3, with the plastic on both sides of the rubberized metal piece a glossy blue or red color.
I think it would be best to leave the inside (palmrest and screen bezel) black; it might be distracting to have that bright a color on the "working surface", so to speak.
Any ideas?

PS smilies are bad.

Plan on using some sort of hard clear coating like laquer or acryllic.  Otherwise your paint will rub off alarmingly easily.  For Paint choice, I'd reccommend Pactra from Testors.  It's a little thin, but it sticks to our plastic cases really well.

I will concur with the recommendation of Pactra paints.  I have worked with other kinds of paints, and while I haven't really tested them on a laptop, I have a feeling that they would come off pretty easily, unless you decide to go with a very thick automotive paint.  The pactra paints do bond with the plastic, and I don't see it coming off any time soon. See the hacks section of applefritter for my Powerbook Sapphire -- I think blue is a great color, although red is certainly a possibility (it was my second choice, and I may do a red computer eventually).   Red will probably be a little less forgiving than blue, since the contrast between it and the black plastic underneath is so much greater.  I've noticed couple of places where I didn't quite mask off the lines perfectly, but it is only noticeable if you look very closely.  I'm sure it would be different with red.

You can also try a keyBORG keyboard replacement if you don't feel up to painting.

OK, I've heard a lot about Pactra from several different people that have done this; now where do I get it?  Can I order it off the internet?

I got mine from a hobby store that sells model airplanes, trains and cars.  The Pactra paint is apparently made for motorized remote control racing cars.

You can find it at any local hobby store or you can buy it online at www.testors.com, however I strongly recommend buying your first can at a store because the color samples on the Pactra web site are worthless.

I used Krylon spray paint to do a Powerbook G3 about 6 months ago.  It can be viewed at:

http://trolls_lair.tripod.com/text/rnbmac.html

I used 3 coats of paint, each added about one-half hour apart and didn't seal it with any form of top coat.  I've used it routienly (several times a day) for the last several months and have noticed no chiping of smudging of the paint (although I am careful not to drop it or do anything to really try to TRY to chip the paint) and it looks as nice today as the day i painted it.  I clean it with an almost dry damp cloth or those little monitor cleaning toweletteettes and have not seen any colour on the cloth.  That's just my 2 and experience... YMMV

If ya don't want to go with the Pactra, I recommend using Rust-Oleum spray paint. It comes in a bunch of colors, including metallic shades (with cool sparklies). Give it a coat or two of high-gloss clear coat spray paint, and when completely dry, wax it.

Yes, I'm serious. Wax it.
With car wax, silly!

The finish is protected by the wax, the shine is enhanced, and the resulting surface is ohh-so-smooth.

Hope that helps

Car Wax

Make sure you use a 100% carnuba car wax and not a silcone based car wax or the finish will dull soon and yellow.

For the absolute best shine, use Zymöl Cleaner Wax.  Below is a picture of what it did for my car.

None, use some form of a spray on application (Spray Paint or an Airbrush).

I did it! I painted it blue! I couldn't find Pactra, but I did find Krylon, which I used, and sprayed it on. I painted the non-rubber part of the outside, but did not paint the trackpad button. Oh well, my windows "friend" will be so envious.
