Is that a problem?

As I said before, it wastes an awful lot of power to have the entire analogue board turned on all the time.

Well, I tried to start a new topic on this to move on to other issues with this hack, but no one seemed interested, so I'll get back to tacking on to this thread/topic...

Anyway, here's where I am now:

The 6214 mobo got a bent pin and went the way of all flesh.

BUT, I just got a cool 6360 to play with, and so I managed to successfully boot this frankenmac, as follows:

(1) ACD electronics plus CC CRT (same as before) is hooked up to the front of the CC case only -- basically this is just a monitor.

(2) CC inner chassis houses the 6214 wiring harness, CC floppy drive, 6214 speaker, 6360 hard drive and 6360 motherboard.

(3) Among the cables coming off of the wiring harness are ribbons for the 6214's video daughterboard and front control box (these are identical to the ones in the 6360). These units are currently "outboard," hanging outside the chassis for now.

(4) Also outboard is the 6360's PSU and 6214's fan.

(5) Finally, the external monitor cable from the ACD is still connected to the ACD's main board. This cable's connector is attached to the monitor port on the 6214 video daughterboard.

So basically this unit is an Apple Color Display, driving a CC CRT, connected to a hybrid of the 6214 and 6360. Electrically, and electronically, it's two separate entities -- a monitor and a Mac -- on their way to living in the same little house: the CC's case.

As I mentioned before, the main thing is to link the two PSU's with a relay, and somehow get an AC jack in the place where it's supposed to be. The stumbling block here is that the ACD's main board is a little too wide to fit in the chassis slots where the CC's analog board goes. So the ACD board has to rest on the top edges of the CC's chassis. This raises the ACD board's AC receptacle at least 1/4" above where the hole is cut in the back of the CC's case. And beyond that, what I really need to be directly accessible to an AC cord is the 6360's PSU, not the ACD's PSU.

I think I will have to cut a hole in the rear grille, where the CC's fan normally is. Which reminds me -- the video board box (the little metal box on the end of the CRT neck) from the ACD is wider than the one from the CC, which means it hits the fan (no pun intended) when one tries to put the rear CC case on.

So the fan's gotta go, probably to be replaced by two much smaller fans.

If anyone on this forum lives within, say, 60 miles of Philadelphia, PA, and would like to help me for a small fee and/or some free Mac stuff, please don't hesitate to email me. I will drive up to your place and bring $$$ and/or Mac items. In particular, I need help with the electrical stuff:

- Getting the two PSUs linked
- Perhaps modding the PSUs (to remove or relocate AC receptacles)
- Extending the length of one small ribbon wire between the ACD's main board and its video board
- Other random fun stuff

Next steps for me:

- extend the CC chassis mobo rails to allow the 6360 mobo to slide all the way in.
- remove some of the middle shelf in the CC chassis to allow clearance for some optional cards on the 6360 mobo.
- figure out a feasible location inside the CC case for the 6360 PSU.

I'm tired just thinking about it.  Tongue

TIA,
Matt

Try to keep the original fan if at all possible; smaller fans will generally be louder for moving the same volume of air.

Here's an idea - desolder both AC receptacles from the PSU and analogue board.  Glue one AC receptacle to the inside of the back of the case where the old one normally sits.  Run wires from this to the solder holes on the PSU, and then run wires from the appropriate PSU outputs to a relay to activate the AC into the analogue board.  The relay in that case is, effectively, a 12V-activated switch and uses the output from the 630 PSU to allow AC current to flow through it into the analogue board.

Yeah, I realize that, but there's just no way. The video board is wider, and it's not just the metal box: the board itself is wider, so one cannot, for example, stick the ACD's video board in the CC's video board box.

One can't move the fan out of the way either, because it already rests against the inside of the CC's side--it can't go any farther to the side than that.

The only way to keep the noise level the same as the current fant would be to relocate it (or a similarly sized but perhaps thinner fan) in the case. One could turn it 90 degrees, but then one would have to cut vent openings in the upper-rear of the CC case's righthand side. Or, maybe--and this is doubtfull--one could flip it up, so it was located between the top of the CRT neck/video board and the underside of the case top, and cut vent slits in the top of the case.

That's a great idea Chris, and it's exactly what I've been thinking to do, with the supplemental idea to either (1) make the wires from the AC receptacle to the PSU very long, or (2) make those wires have a modular plug connection so they can be unplugged. Either of these arrangements would allow for easy removal of the CC's rear casing in the future.

Problem with all this is, I have neither the equipment, nor the soldering skills, nor the electrical knowledge, to do it. As I noted earlier in this thread, anyone within 60 (or even 75) miles of Philly who can help, I would be happy to come to you for help, and to pay in cash and/or trade -- I could give you the analog board I removed from this CC, or even an entire other, stock, CC I have.
