Color Classic dilemma

I've got a Mac Color Classic that I've been wanting to upgrade using the logic board from a Performa 575. I've tried doing this before with a 575 logic board that I picked up on eBay but it was a no-go, I kept getting an error message saying that there a "bus error." So I picked up a Performa 575 for $10 & tried the logic board on that - same result. I got the same bus error, whether I booted up with the extensions on or off, and even when I tried to boot up from a floppy diskette. Has anyone here run across this, or know why it hasn't worked out for me?

Thanks for the reference. I tried doing the ResEdit hack by editing the 'gusd' resources (changing the boot process from '21' to '10' at gestalt ID '99'), but I still got the same message of there being a 'bus error'. Is there anyone out there who has done this hack successfully that can shed some light on the process? I'd like to know how to make this work. For instance, after making a copy of the System file, do you then keep both copies in the System Folder? http://www.colourclassicfaq.com/mobo/mystic.shtml#Q2.1.3

As I did the ResEdit work, I think I'm probably qualified to comment on it... No, you don't keep both copies of the System file around. The copy is just so you don't accidentally (and irreparably) mess up your working version. Once you've made the mods with ResEdit and tested them, you can (and should) toss the old copy of your System file. The directions (should) explicitly state to put the copy somewhere other than the System Folder. I think you'll find that if you remove the old copy, leaving only the new one, it'll work fine. p

Booting from OS8 (cd) and reinstalling the OS will also work just as easily. And, you don't have to use vintage System7.

Actually, the online reference with the instructions for the hack states that it's for OS 7.5, 7.6, or 8.x. So it'd appear that I'd have to run the ResEdit fix before upgrading to OS 8. On a related matter, I also happen to have a fully functioning Performa 550. If I were to pull the logic board out to use with my Color Classic, does anyone know if I could then use the Performa 575 board in the 550 without performing any hacks?

Woo hoo! Thanks for all the insightful hints & follow-up, guys. As it turned out, I was able to hack both OS 7.6.1 & OS 8.1 using ResEdit w/o getting into a pickle. So now I have a legendary Mystic (CC --> 68LC040) running OS 8.1 like a champ @ 1000 colors, displayed over a ‘wider’ resolution of 560 x 384 (a nice improvement over 512 x 384). I upped the RAM to 36 MB (Ram ‘tripled’ to over an 100), so this little Mystic is actually pretty snappy on the Web over my DSL network. Here’s a snapshot of a few of the specs according to the Apple System Profiler: http://www.geocities.com/hermetica_west/images/Mystic.gif.
