Introduction and Apple iic help required.

Hi All

Since this is my first post I would like to introduce myself and say hi to all the forum members.

Back in 86 when I lived in Australia my mum got an Apple IIc with monochrome monitor for the family and I fell in love with it. My favorite memories where playing the old Microzine educational games and printing out huge banners on the dot matrix printer to hang in my room for some reason? Sadly the Apple IIc got sold for peanuts the early 90's. Fast forward to a few months ago and I was trawling Craigslist and saw a beatup iic for sale at a reasonable price. I made a deal got it home dissembled and cleaned it. (Still needs a retrobrite) Ordered the transfer cables and some disks for ADTPro hooked my iic up to a CRT via composite and was back in 1986 again!

Anyway due to lack of space I decided to order a VGA adapter from Nishida Radio in Japan. It finally arrived but when I connect it the image on the VGA monitor flickers and is not very pretty. I tried a new VGA cable and same thing. I cleaned the iic port with some 99% isopropyl alcohol and wooden toothpicks and no change. Two things clear the flickering up a little.

1- When I touch the solder points on the back of the adapter lightly the image clears up quite a bit.
2 - After it has been on for around 30 minutes the flicking gets a tiny bit better I am guessing due to the adapter heating up.

My theory is the solder on the adapter needs to be re-flowed? Or could it be the port on the iic is too old?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated Smile

Re: Introduction and Apple iic help required.

Hi - and welcome.

Nishida does some nice work, for sure. My guess is that the trouble lies inward rather than outward... I would be looking at the capacitors on the IIc motherboard for potential replacement, for example. The better-when-warm symptom strengthens that theory, too.

That said... I also try to maximize space. I buy very multifunction monitors with multitudes of inputs - the more, the better. That way you can use the same device for a PC or Mac and flip over to the Apple if it has composite input. I have one that even has SCART (unheard of in the US) that is useful for IIgs RGB input. If you get lucky, it has PIP (Picture in Picture) that lets you see both VGA and composite at the same time. Anyway... just food for thought, sometimes having the Apple do VGA isn't the only way to get an image on a monitor.

I agree with David, check the //c, and also let Nishida know your problem, he may be able to think of a solution.I have two of is VGA adapters and never had a problem with them.
Cheers
