So I have my RS-232 to usb cable plugged in and I've searched google for info on how to do this finding mostly dead links. What I've done so far is download Z-term and install the latest release of Mac OS X Prolific PL2303 driver project. All I came up with so far is the Mac sees it as this in System profiler:

Anyone know how to setup Zterm to connect to it?
This is an excerpt from Apple I Replica Creation:
When launching ZTerm, hold down the shift key. This will produce a menu where you can choose which serial port to use. If you’re using the internal serial port on an older machine, you’ll want to select “printer” or “modem” port. With a USB adapter, the name will be something obscure such as “USA19191P1.1.”
Once the program is launched, choose “Connection” from the “Settings” menu and confirm that all your settings match those in table x.x. All other settings can be left at their defaults. Make sure your replica is running and has been reset. Text you now type in the terminal will be sent to the Apple I and video output will be sent to the terminal. Programs, available from the Apple I Owners Club on Applefritter, can be entered merely by using cut and paste in the terminal or by going to the File menu, selecting “Send Text,” and choosing the file that contains the program.

Thank you, Tom. While the mac can See the connection to the replica Zterm does not. The problem I'm having now is when I go to select the serial port it only lets me select "bluetooth pda sync" or "bluetooth modem"
How does the Mac "see the connection to the replica"?
I saw it showing up in system profiler. Apparently installing a different driver was needed. Its working now!
Well only half working it seems... I can type on the replica and it will show up in zterm now. If I try to send anything the other way everything pretty much locks up. I did change the data rate and everything as mentioned above...and caps lock on. I'll have to work on it some more.
As soon as I try to type in term nothing happens and typing on the replica1 or resetting it does nothing after that.
1 thing I found so far is if I send a text file to the replica It will send the first character followed by a / then the screen will scroll blank line by line. At the same time nothing is happing on the terminal screen.

Well I've tried playing with the OSX terminal a bit.
I can type: screen /dev/tty.usbserial 2400
It connects and does basically the same thing as ZTERM at that point...still no input to the replica but it doesn't lock up the replica if I type on the mac. Might be on to something...
Thinking it has to be a compatiblilty issue with my serial adapter. If anyone knows the brand name of a confirmed working adapter let me know and I'll give that a try.
In the meantime looks like I'll be loading programs the real old fashioned way...by typing them in!
I use a KeySpan USB Serial adapter. It usually works. To interface with an Apple II, I remember setting a bunch of things using stty. I don't remember what settings I actually used. man stty
