Unable to partition drive for Ubuntu

Hey...

I've ran into a problem while attempting to install Ubuntu linux on my PC...all goes well until the partitioner begins....then, I resize the current partition from 115GB to 95GB, and all I get is nothing.I stayed up to 1.30 Am trying to figure this thing out, but I gave up... The PC boots from the live CD really smoothly, and using Gparted tells me its unable to read the contents of the partition. Any help/ideas?

Athlon XP 2800+
1GB RAM
120 GB HD
GeForce 6800 GS

Partition not resizing

Ok, I guess I've made some progress...the partition screen doesn't lock anymore, instead, when I resize the partition, it doesn't take effect. Say I resized it from 115GB to 95GB, when I hit 'done' the partition screen returns to showing 115GB as the main partition.

What is the old partition for

What is the old partition formatted as? Linux has a history of having trouble with NTFS.

NTFS

Hey,

The old partition is formatted as NTFS. I do have a second FAT32 partition, but is is for the Windoze recovery system. What can I do now?

Use something like Partition

Use something like Partition Magic to resize it. Other tools should work, but I have no idea which to reccommend.

Try going to ubuntuforums.org and putting resize ntfs in the search box.

Partition Magic NOT working

Hey,

I downloaded a trial of Partition Magic, and once I do all the changes, I click 'apply', and the disk goes back to how it was before, like I never made any changes!!! Any other programs/ways I can make a new partition?

BTW, I read the forum, and I did that, but when I open Gparted, it gives me "Cannot read the content of the disk" type of thing.

Drive Partitioned

Hey...

I was able to partition the drive using BootIt NG. Now the installer sez "No root file system"...can anyone (continue) helping me out here?

Hey Jon,

Yes, I created a partition in the new space. In disk director (under windows), it shows up as a partition, with the name "/media/hda3
I formatted it as FAT32, size is 'bout 15 GB's.

In the Ubuntu installer you'l

In the Ubuntu installer you'll need to select that partition, change the system type to EXT2, EXT3, or ReiserFS and set the mount point on it as /. If you had left it as empty space, you could have just had the installer configure the empty space automatically.

Dual Boot is good

The dual booting is going great! Now what I need to do is setup a printer, and I'll have a nearly perfect system.... Smiling

BTW..I noticed Firefox is waay more responsive than in Windows, and loads pages probably 5-7X faster than teh windows version.
