old imac wont boot to OSX ->console mode instead
I rebooted after running security etc updates, now my old imac won't start up OSX. the wierd thing is that it asks me for user and password, which I enter, that is as far as I can get (Darwin/BSD console ). Any help would be appreciated!

I tried cmd-v and a bunch of text scrolled by. It appears there are some files missing ... hp.com, and other files that are not found. Any other ideas? I booted from my OSX disk (the upgrade one) and it says that my hard disk has a newer operating system on it, not sure why it thinks that! I just ran the Hardware Test Disk and the memory test failed. I got this error Mem_/4/7 the first time I tried it again and got Mem_/5/8 error the second time. Any idea what that means? I pulled the memory sticks out and re-inserted them and no change.

If you ran a system update (possibly including security updates, but definitely updating from, say, 10.4.4 to 10.4.5), then you are running a newer version of the OS, and it won't let you install a version that doesn't includes those updates over it. You can, however, run an archive-and-install (don't forget about the "preserve user and network settings" option!).
Does it give you an error of any sort? You might try booting with verbose output enabled, by holding Cmd-V at the chimes.
