wireless/powerbook/OSX

Belkin F5D7010 -- It;s listed on the box as a "Wireless G" notebook card, and the model number is on the bottom of the box in very small print. Available at your local Wal-Mart for about $35 US.

I'm using one in my Lombard as we speak (Mac OS X Panther 10.3.9). Plugged it in and it was immediately recognized as an AirPort card, with no additional drivers or setup.

I just got the aforementioned belkini f5d7010 and popped the sucker in my lombard. 10.3.8 is not seeing it as an airport card. I am not sure if I am not doing something right. I tried booting the computer with the card in, and it didn't work. I tried putting the card in when the computer was already on to no avail. I have been going to the airport setup assistant and it keeps telling me that I don't have the appropriate airport card plugged in and only gives me the option to exit or shut down. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

a) a Lombard for sure (not Pismo - firewire machine)
b) everything else original to Lombard?

the only amendments i have made are new HD, and new memory. everything else is as-is. (cept OSX 3.

Try updating to 10.3.9. IIRC the Internet Connect App was updated in that update.

I definitely have a Lombard -- SCSI port, 2 USB, no FireWire. Mine runs Panther 10.3.9 on 512 MB RAM, with a 20 GB HD.

When you insert the card, a new icon should show up in your menubar. Click it and power the card on.

If you now go to your Network preferences, you should be able to set your AirPort (Belkin) card to connect to your network. I also check the box to show AirPort in the menubar, so I can join new networks at new locations.

of course i have no DVD drive and took me long enough to find 10.3 period on CD. of course it is just an update (thinking as i type)i bet i can have someone download and burn it..

did all of above. still no joy.
does not recognise as Aiport card.
i thought the Lombard was not airport compatible?
or do i need additional drivers?
if someone used this and it was immediately recognised as an Aiport card, what am i missing?
i downloaded 10.3.9 at a friends using ethernet.
did ALL updates.
still doesnt see Belkin card.
have been in Internet set-up, airport assistant, network etc etc etc etc

sadly, it still wont work.

1. it (Belkin card icon) shows up in menu bar (already powered on) and, i did try "power on" and "off" just to be sure.
2. system pref>network>show configs> there is ONLY 2 options to check. a) ethernet b) internal modem. there is no "airport" button to check as shown in your picture.

1) When you plug in the Belkin card, it will be powered off. You
should, however, see a new icon in your menubar like the one in
Picture 1. Click the new icon and power the card on.

2) Now go to your System Preferences > Network. Select Show >
Network Port Configurations and make sure AirPort is checked *on*.

3) Select Show > AirPort and check the box that says "Show AirPort in
the menubar." Another new icon should show up on the menubar as shown
in Picture 3. Click the new icon and select the network you want to
connect to.

4) You should now be connected.

You have to open Internet Connect when the card is in, then you should have an option to turn on Airport. If you don't, then there's a problem with the card.

the option in internet connect has the "airport" option grayed out.
i dont think there is a problem w/ the card? it shows up fine in my friends PC (yes i know its a PC card).
it just isnt seeing the card for some reason.
i've tried booting w/ card in/out.
been through all the above.
have all the updates for X.3.9 from Apple site this morning.
you guys sure you didnt change any other perttinent hard/software that i'm missing?

i'm running Lombard 333, new Hitachi 60gig HD, 256 MB.

Are you sure your Lombard's PCMCIA slot isn't dead? Do you have another card to try in it?

i'm not totally sure...but if flashes green when i put the card in, shows in menu bar, and is seen as a hardware in system profile.

Some manufacturers (Belkin is one I've heard before for sure) like to change chipsets in the middle of a model run. You might check what chipset you got for what particular revision of the card you have. It may be that they've since switched chipsets since the working one was purchased.

i second that! but i see there are some cards on ebay that are hand checked to make sure they have the right chipsets in them. i would return the belkin and see what there is on ebay. the guy selling them has AMAZING feedback.

I spoke to "useless" (only using your screenname, I wouldn't call you that to your face ...) on the phone last night and it seems that's exactly what's going on. My Belkin card and hers are both model F5D7010. Mine (which works great in my Lombard) is a "series 4000" and hers (which her Lombard won't recognize) is a "series 5000." My guess is that the difference is the chipset.

Jerks. If they're using a different chipset, there should be some identification or demarcation on the box so we can be certain to buy the same product twice. Whatever happened to truth in labeling?

Anyway, "useless" said she'll be taking the card back to CompUSA and will see what they have at the Apple Store. At least Apple ought to have something Mac compatible ...

i took it back today.
found something at Macwireless that swears it works w/lombard etc. its more like $90 to COMPUSA/Belkins $40, but at this point if it works, great! seemed more reliable than going the Ebay route, too. dude there has his cards for $70+ and then shipping, but doesnt even show a photo of card. i reckon he bought up all the Belkins and re-labelled them...ha ha ha ha ha LOL. :-)
so i'll keep my fingers crossed.
meanwhile i agree, if they change anything they should give it a new name/number...

I was almost ready to buy one from there too but i dont use my powerbook enough to need it. although that PCI adapter for my G4 looks pretty Hawt!

it came today, amazingly (i guess they are based over the bridge). sure enough-my lombard recognised it as airport card! hurrah! sadly, there appears to be no network, so i'm glad i decided to geet the card that allows an external antenna (which i havent puchased yet).
thing is, my boyfriends PC picks up several networks, albeit most of them locked. tried running and re-running airport setup assistant, as well as network prefs. but no joy.
can it be that thee card acts differently with a Mac vs Pc?
is it somehow "locked" to only look for certain networks?
is it maybe not as strong a card?
or am i missing something really obvious in configs?

With just the antenna in the card (no external), you will have very limited range. "Normal" range is about 90 feet, but can be shorter if you're in a building with a lot of steel, concrete or brick. And shorter still with a shorter antenna.

For example, in my home we keep our AirPort Extreme Base Station on the ground floor by the television (hooked to our cable modem for internet access). My wife's office is upstairs, on the other side of the house from the base station. In theory, we shouldn't be out of range here -- only about 25 feet. But between my wife's desk and the base station are a cast iron radiator and a brick chimney. Sometimes she can connect, sometimes not.

Although later PowerBooks (Titanium and Aluminum series) and all iBooks have antennae built into their displays for additional range, the Pismos, Lombards, Wallstreets and Mainstreets did not. So you're relying on only the card's small internal antenna for reception. Not good.

If you have the option to use an external antenna, you should probably purchase one (or build the Pringles "cantenna" described in an issue of Mac Addict last year ...). Since you seem to be relying on neighbors for access to their wireless networks, you'll need all the range you can get.

In the meantime, you might be able to check the box to "use interference robustness." This might help to filter out any interference in the signal between you and the base station(s) you're using.

You should be able to connect to any open network, as long as you can "reach" it.

Pismo's had one in the screen also. The titaniums had it on the side of the body not the display.

I've got a Truemobile 1150 16-bit PCMCIA (ie non-CardBus) that works just great under Linux and Winders. I don't have a PCMCIA capable Mac, but it's just an OEM'd Lucent card. It ought to work. It's about the most compatible card I've used.

i am happy to report that i am now online. thanks to everyones help! i popped the card in, it was recognised, and Aiport showed up fine in Network>Show>Network Port Configurations. then crawled on top of the cooker with the old PB on my knee and managed to pick up some signal. still have to get/make and external antenna.
my macwireless.com card works, but at $100 it was an expensive route to go. if anyone is looking for a cheaper option, yes Compusa does have the Belkin 7010 for $35 but its the WRONG chipset. best bet probably ebay for an older version.

I have te same problem on a slightly different mac, Powerbook G3 Wallstreet 500MHz, firewire, 384MB RAM.
The belkin card I have is a version 7000 so the version 3000 driver doesn't work. I read the chipset was constantly changing on this item (how dum is that!!) and would like to discover the chipset maker in this version so I can find an appropriate driver.

anyone know of a list of chipsets versus version number for the Belkin Wireless G Notebook card? That would help.....
