prodos disk problems

Ive got an apple iigs, and ive been trying to copy files to prodis disks under mac os 9.2.2. Whenever I copy a file, it completly locks up. Ive already tried deleting my prefrences files, and reseting the pram files. Ive also tried different floppy cables and floppy frives, and other disks. Any suggestions?

OS9 9.2.2 is too new...

You won't have any luck writing ProDOS diskettes using a modern 1.44 meg floppy drive. You need an old (preferably 680x0-based) Mac and drive for that.

well, ive been able to write the files, i had to switch to os 8.1, but now i need to be able to remove the resource forks for shrinkit to work any suggestions?

Forks, forks, everywhere...

Hmmm. In OS X, you can access the resource and data forks directly...
cat myfile/..namedfork/data
cat myfile/..namedfork/rsrc

But then you are back to squre 1, needing to get it back to ProDOS floppy. Undecided You need some utilities on the GS end to manipulate the files.

GS-Shrinkit seems to be able to handle files that have been molested by Macs - are you using that?

You might need to use shrink-

You might need to use shrink-it GS, because GS/OS is not 8 bit. It will run 8 bit, but it is more than 8 bit.
Try formatting the 3.5 disk on the IIgs. This way you have a blank ready to go. So Macs had a hard time formatting a prodos disk. But if you have one that already is,it could put files on it.
I am running into a simalar problem. Have a bunch of disks that were put on a CD from a Mac compressed on a mac and IIgs. At least I think so. I can pull them off the Mac with OSX onto a zip disk and read them on the IIgs with the zip but the IIgs does not know what to do with them. Will have to try an older OS and see it that helps.

Oh, building the GS boot diskettes...

Ok, I see now - you need to get GSOS booted in the first place. Ok, try this:

  1. Download DiskDup+: http://www.tucows.com/get/206989_84891
  2. Use DiskDup+ on the earliest version of MacOS you have available (7.5 is ideal) to build diskettes from Apple's disk images
  3. The GS should be able to boot using these diskettes.
