iMac 24" has separate video card . . .

with a huge heat sink! The card itself is maybe 6-8cm square and has a copper heat sink with transfer tubes running off to a separate radiator.

The 24" comes with a 128MB 7300GT but has BTO option for 256MB 7600GT.

death knell for mac mini?

Short of home theatre folks, I'm not sure if the Mac Mini will be able to compete with the $999 iMac. Same video chipset, better CPU, nice big display, bigger and faster hard drive, and for a price that is within $100 of a mac mini with keyboard, mouse, and comparable lcd panel.

On the upside, I think I'll have an easier time talking my soon to be wife into letting me buy a new iMac. It looks incredibly promising. Also, note that the 24" model boasts the first time that FW 800 appeared on ANY iMac. Looks like FW 800 isn't dead after all.

.

One thing about the $1k iMac is that it has shared vram...

But still, its pretty cool.

This might also be a sign tha

This might also be a sign that the $499 mini may be on a come back.

EDIT: And the $1199 17" iMac looks nice too. Dedicated GPU/VRAM, more RAM, faster CPU w/ double the cache, SuperDrive, BlueTooth & remote for an extra $200. Not a bad deal at all.

And then there's the Apple supplied VESA mount kits again. Eye-wink

My mom

My mom has been looking at new computers to replace her ageing iMac DV 400. I think I might recommend this one to her. She doesn't want to spend a lot of money (yeah right) and she doesn't want a Mac Mini. I think this might be the ticket that would get her interested.

I have always been the one to wait till they iron-out the kinks in a product. It seems that the iMac Line is stable, i might just go recommend this to her.

Shared video ram on intel based macs

Provided you have 1gb of ram or more, machines with the GMA 950 are pretty decent. If you insist on sticking with the stock 512mb of ram, well, good luck with that. It isn't pretty or fun. In fact, I'm surprised that Apple hasn't bumped the stock ram config to 1gb because of this.

So far, I love my black MacBook 2.0. The GMA950 isn't the greatest, but the $500 premium for a bigger LCD, aluminum enclosure, and dedicated video chipset wasn't worth it to me.

Oh, wow! That means that it's theoretically upgradable. I really didn't see that coming.

Is that MXM video card thing

Is that MXM video card thing the same as some companies like alienware were using to get upgradable video cards in laptops?

But, if the MXM is true, you

But, if the MXM is true, you might be able to find a replacement video card for a few $$ and upgrade.
