Performa Info please

I haven't posted anything for many months since I don't use the performa for any normal use. It has 7.5.3 sys and I was attempting to get the 9.1 without spending a lot of money. I thought I found the ticket on ebay and purchased a three disc set that gave the impression that it would install 9.04 and allow a 9.1 upgrade from apple, *It don't* so that was a waste of money and time. It says on the infomation that it could be used to boot and load a 9.04 system and it does indeed boot but that's all it will not install, instead it errors out saying see other documentation and that it can't be installed on my system.

I guess the question of importance is can a 9.1 be installed without a lower system already installed or does it need a base earlier system. I ask this because when I start looking again I should know since I don't have sys 8.1.

While running the system 7.5.3 I was online but every time I went online I would get endless java script errors and crashes to the point it was senseless to attempt any browsing. I need a newer browser of course but what is a pratical approach to bringing the system and software up to a useable level. I only want the machine to browse a little and maybe listen to my music and possibly even use the video capture card installed. I topped the memory off already and installed the good nic card.

you should be able to run OS 8.5 or 8.6 on that and be able to use IE 5.1. IE is not my favorite browser but it works on nearly every website and I think OS 8.5 has IE 5.0 as part of the install softwate.

I also have the OEM software bundel that came with the 6400/6500 macs/performas and it has OS 8.0 with several other CDs in it.

8.5/8.6

The Mac OS 8.5/8.6 discs came with IE 4.5 on them. IE 5.0 came with OS 9 and later discs. The Performace 6400 is good to run any OS all the way up to 9.1 on.

You can actually run OS9.2 using OS9 Helper.

I'm guessing the three CD's you bought on eBay were machine-specific--probably for the B&W G3 or the second generation iMacs--which is why it won't install 9.0.4. Possibly the 9.0.4 is machine specific, and the other two are generic upgrades. You need the generic OS9 install disk that's white with a big yellow 9 on it. I've installed 9 on many Performas with that CD--no problem. Once you've installed 9.0 on your harddrive, you can then upgrade to 9.1 and even 9.2 by downloading the upgrades:

A Performa running OS 9.1 with 136mb RAM is a happy machine. A Performa with an L2 G3 upgrade is a happier machine. They're very cheap now on eBay. 400/512 L2 G3 cards are selling for $20-$30.

IE 5 is bundled in OS 9, but there are now better browsers compatible with 9 you can download.

ITunes 2.0.4 is the best version of ITunes that works on 9. You can find the download somewhere buried on Apple's site if you search hard.

Thanks everyone for the infomation, I was busy for the past two days but I do appreciate the advice and I'll check into it. For now I have a new project going trying to install the freecast peer to peer radio on my linux box. It sounds interesting since it unloads your bandwidth on a small dsl system and allows many many more listeners on your broadcast. I have it sending out but still need to configure it, unfortunately the creators are french and the infomation is a little tuff to dissect, heh heh

I'll let you all know when I get the Performa performing.
