Installing PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K05 in PBTi

I may have missed it, but what version of X are you running?
If it is 10.4.3 or higher, it should support this drive just fine...
and, it is showing up as firmware version 1.03, which as near as I can tell is the latest firmware for this drive....

EDIT: you said patchburn 3... if you are running 10.4, you should be using patchburn 4.

also, I think (not 100% sure though) that you may need to update to 10.4 and use patchburn 4 if you are only running 10.3 now.

I did a similar installation on my TiPowerbook 500, also with a Pioneer drive (not sure if it's the same one, but I think so), also used patchburn.

There are a couple of things that are not enabled with Patchburn (maybe I should check the website to see if any of these have changed but. . .);
-Patchburn only allows a dual sided DVD burner to act as a single sided DVD burner.
-As a storage device for the Finder Program you can burn both DVD-R's and DVD+R's, but Apple issued software (iDVD, iTunes) will only recognize DVD-R's.

worked for my pioneer dvr-110 (5.25" drive, external firewire enclosure)

edit: the above post stated that iDVD and iTunes would only recognize DVD-R using this method while the finder would support DVD-R and DVD+R.
While I no longer think that this is the case with 10.4 and patchburn 4, I cannot confirm it. The DVD spindles I have at home are DVD-R and DVD+R DL. I seem to remember using some DVD+R media when I brought my machine over to a friends house and used his blanks, but I cannot say for certian.
I CAN say that with 10.4 I do have Native iApp support, and support for Dual Layer burning, even in iDVD. I can also add that the same friend i mentioned above owns a 20" G5 iMac ALS Model (no camera)[iMacs use laptop DVD drives] and his internal Matsushita (Panasonic) DVD burner had a mechanical failure, when he recieved his "install it yourself" warranty replacement it was a Pioneer K-05 drive (of coures, it did have the apple logo on it, but it was a pioneer drive none the less)

Finding what types of CD and DVD media you can burn
If your computer has an internal or external recordable optical drive supported by Apple, you can "burn" or record your favorite music, applications, documents, digital photos and video, and other digital files to recordable CD and DVD discs. You can create your own music CDs and play them on a standard audio player, or create DVDs with movies and slideshows and play them on a DVD player.

Not all optical disc drives can burn all types of optical discs. If your Macintosh has a SuperDrive, it can burn DVDs and CDs. If it has a Combo Drive, it can burn only CDs. For more detailed information on what kinds of discs your drive can burn, use the System Profiler.

To see what types of discs you can burn:
Open System Profiler, located in /Applications/Utilities.
Select Disc Burning in the Hardware list.
If more than one disc drive is connected to your computer, select the one you want to use from the list of drives.
Look at the entries for "CD-Write" and "DVD-Write." They should contain items like "+R," "-RW," or "+R DL." To find out what these items are, click the link below.
To see the supported burning speed, insert a blank disc in the drive.

So apparantly OS 10.4.8 does recognize the dual layer burning capability but I guess that's for DVD+R DL. I haven't tried it with iTunes 7.0.1 or the latest version of iDVD yet with a DVD+R, but with version iTunes v6.? and iDVD v4.0.1 it didn't recognize them.

I'm using 10.3.9 and that's why I had to use patch 3.
I don't know if I have the budget to update to 10.4 yet. I'm actually ready to just buy a whole new laptop if i'm going to spend more money on this guy.

I pasted what my hardware profile says above. none of those details are included in it. what OS are you using?

My 667 DVI TiBook is nearly exactly the same config, including OS 10.3.9 and DVR-K05 v1.03. I used Patchburn 3 and now it can burn CD-R and DVD-R disks using Disk Utility and iTunes. Sooooo . . . eh?

you know, I actually hadnt thought about this, but there is the possibility that your drive is actually physically defective as well.

So I decided to run a little experiment with what you just said. I took a software that needs installing, ie it mounted a virtual disk on my desktop. Then I went to Disk Utility and there it showed the mounted disk. I told it to burn on my dvd. And what do you know, it successfully burned it on a dvd. Mind you at 1X speed, but hey, I'll take it at this point. This proves that it works.
I have been trying to burn with a program called Yuburn. I'll try iTunes and let you know what happens

also check with TOAST im pretty sure it will be fully supported there

i didnt know anything about youburner, so i tried to research it and all i found was old version tracker and the authors japanese and english site, with almost no information... so when i tried to look at the authors "forums" for info i found that they were FLOODED to the top with "blog spam" and bot entries....

Im not convinced that Youburner EVER worked. (maybe for some... but ive never heard of it, and i've been using GNU and GPL software for quite some time.

What I was trying to do is "backup" my dvd movie. so I ripped it and wanted to make a copy of it. 2 problems.
1. for some reason, iTunes won't play it, so i can't burn it using iTunes.
2. Even if I could burn it, the blank dvd I have holds only 4.7 gb and the movie is 7.4gb.
I have some research to do.
Bottom line is that I know now the dvd burner works and what I need to do.

they are not applications. I would say your machine has enough strength in it to drive tiger. I would suggest trying to find it on eBay. You might find a used copy for cheap.

what noticable benefit would I get from it? All I do is watch dvd, surf the web, write papers, and listen to music.
I don't know how much 10.4 would help me. but i'll read it's features and make a decision then.

GNU and GPL are liscence types... for open source software, which Youburner appears to be. I thought you were into "free" software, and thats why you werent using a real burning app.

use mactheripper to rip your dvd and remove macrovision / region encoding

and burn the inages with toast

(or disk utility actually)

also, if you are less than scrupulous, then it is not required to buy anything to upgrade. its out there, and that is all i will say about that.

It might make your burner work under all your apps. I know that a drive I had that was semi-supported under Panther, became fully functional in everything throughout the whole system after using 10.4 On top of that, the burn speed went from 1x to 16x! (which is what the drive does)

funny how they said that after 10.4.3 apple built "support for their drive" right into the OS..

thats because apple built in support for 3rd party drive after 10.4.3

Also, here is Apples "Mac OS X Tiger feature comparison chart", comparing it out against panther and jaguar... the chart has alot of fluff in it though, there are more fundemental differences between these OS's that the user just doesnt see.

I'm having the same problem you had except that I do have tiger, 10.4.10. I tried installing Patchburn 4 and it could not recognize the image as a recorder either. So I am not sure where to go from here.
I have a G3 Powerbook Pismo which this recorder is supposed to work with.

I think that you need to uninstall Patchburn, as OS 10.4 has support for this drive, and Patchburn will interfere with that.

It was giving me the same problem before I installed patchburn, although I agree with what you are saying. I will uninstall it. The dvd recorder is actually a panasonic recorder but the computer reads it as the above.

I have now downloaded another burn program, Simply Burns, and it appears to be working fine. Not sure what the problem was with the other.
