iMac CD Drive

Well i upgraded my Tangerine iMac DV as far as i could, given my budget, and i got a DVD/CD-RW slot loading drive for it from a powerbook g4. Got it home, and tried to install it. When i connected the connector it stuck out of the other side, which meant i couldnt have it in the imac.

Then the other day, i got a box load of iBook clamshell parts. I was looking through when i found the optical drive connector, and what it appears to do is move the connector to the other side of the drive. Now, i dont have the drive here, but i am going to try it on friday or saturday. Does anybody know if this will work?

Thought id post my findings, because 1, it might be able to help other people, and 2, i needed to vent!

Yeah, thats gonna work. You just have to swap that little converter board on the back of the drive.

great idea, but . . .

the SL iMac's cable won't fit into the trayload iMac's optical adapter - different sized connectors.

For SL iMacs, I've fabbed a working setup - using some 50pin scsi ribbon cable, a couple of 40pin ATA IDC connectors, a 50pin IDC connector and an adapter to use slim opticals on a standard 40pin ATA cable. Guess I ought to publish the details one of these days.

Ok, here's a quick snap, for all the good it'll do ya Sticking out tongue

It was critical to twist the middle connector (the optical drive) 180 degrees so it ends up right side up.

eugh, my ibook connector didnt work either. it was still upside down, but at the other side this time! haha. meh, guess ill have to stick with just cd reading for now.
