? UseEthernet from Emac to Imac G3 to re-install OS on G3 Imac?

Hello:

I posted the thread for using the Performa drive in these G3 Imacs (with defective CD-ROM drives).

Someone local wondered whether I could use just use the Emac with a crossover cable to plug into the G3 Imac ethernet port (assuming those ports work)to re-format the drive and then re-install an OS.

If anyone can speak to whether crossover cable idea would work, I would certainly appreciate knowing without doing error and trial to find out.
I am posting this before I pull all the drives from the G3 Imacs just in case the crossover cable would work.

I had assumed that the OS would be needed to use the ethernet part as I prepared the last thread. But hopefully I am wrong on that assumption.

You are correct on that assumption.
The only way that would work is if you had Mac OS X Server on the eMac, then you could use netboot.

OS X Server Idea:

I may have to invest in OS X Server when Lepard comes out.
That may be worth doing in the long run for me anyway. Most likely, I will purchase the firewire enclosure fairly soon. But the server OS is an interesting idea to try to build into short term planning for several reasons.

Do the g3 imacs have firewire

Do the g3 imacs have firewire ports? If so you could just boot to target mode.

Firewire ports idea

Unfortunately, these Imacs are the summer of 1999 G3-333 so called "trayload" variety that did not include the firewire ports. However later versions of the G3 Imacs did indeed have firewire ports.

Thank you for thinking and asking about the fireiwre port ... that would have simplified things a lot.

USB boot?

IIRC those iMacs can USB boot . . . assuming I am recalling correctly.

Starting with the DV Series they were able to boot USB. but then again, those machines have FireWire ports anyways....
