Hey,

I'm a film freak. I've actually seen most of the films on your list and own some as well. I could do two hours on this list (BTW, some of the movies are mentioned on my website). The only comment that I absolutely positively have to make is if you like Jean Luc Godard's "Breathless" then you must see "Band of Outsiders" by him as well. It's a very smart list.

I think if you rip them all under 700mb, you could almost barely squeeze them all onto your 80GB iPod. If you don't care to watch them on an external display, I think you could rip them much smaller, and they'd easily all fit. Does this strike anyone else as ... impossible? (even though it isn't)

Hey,

Watch Stanley Kubrick or Godard or Kurosawa on an iPod? This is not a good idea. Adam Sandler on an iPod, I got no problem with that. TV shows, ok on an iPod. This is not the upside of technology when you reduce the visual genius of some filmmakers to a disposable visual medium. This isn't a snob rant. It's about actually experiencing the film. Good films need that.

when I've worked my way through what I've got so far . . .

NetFlix is like a candy store, I just don't know where to stop. I'm quite addicted already.

Heh, re: "Band of Outsiders" - great! After adding that and all the other flics I spotted along with it, my list now has 118 items. Acute

re: rip - I've got about 100GBs of cinema on a server disk already, generally ripped at about 1mb/s, and I just bought a couple more 180GB SCSI drives so I have enough room. I don't have a video iPod, but I do tend to watch films (at home) on computers rather than on televisions. I've never warmed up to watching film on NTSC screens nor do I think I'd watch anything worthwhile on an iPod, at least not the first time through.

Hey,

I love to watch DVDs on my Pismo. Or Lombard. Great screens. With headphones. Living in NYC, going to the movies can be a major PITA. I watch VHS on my Beige G3. That I might replace with a TV. You're in for some great flicks. Have fun.

I don't think it will be too long before handhelds include tiny bright contrasty HD projectors. Sure, nearly 9 minutes of battery power doesn't really impress... but for an 11ft screen I'll bring along the ac adapter.

I think a quality 8-pass rip at 640x480 would be tolerable on a SDTV, say a 38" tube. But your right... even then I wouldn't want that to be my only copy.
