Also, this guy uses a hex driver, but i used a torx t8 screwdriver (i think thats the right size!) which works just as well

that's one of the white models, not a clamshell. if yours is an ice model (and you're willing to dedicate the time), you could remove the paint from in the cover to make it clear. that has a good effect as well. can't tell if yours is an ice or a snow one though.

The OP has a whitish dual USB iBook, which would be a square white one. We tend to think of the originals as the clamshells, for distinction, but clam shell really refers to the way the case opens not the actual case shape. Nearly all modern laptops are clam shell designs.

The easiest distinction for a painted inner shell iBook or an opaque shell is to look at the case edges and the inner plastics. iBooks with painted clear plastic show the screw holes and screws though the edges of the case and have a gray painted palm rest and screen surround. Opaques have white and show no signs of the screw holes other than where the heads of the screws are.

Also, all 600MHz and slower dual USBs have painted cases. All 800MHz and above have opaques. The only ones that really need to be checked are 700MHz ones, as they span the high/low end of the model lines during the switch.

well, looking at the shadow being cast by the apple logo, it looks to be an ice model. i've done the clear case mod, and i'll admit i loved the results. plenty of instructions on here already, though, so i won't bother with detail.

I think you're wrong. The iBooks with 16MB R7500 GPUs (700/800) and later use the opaque (though translucent) white polycarb shell (including all 800s and 900s.) The only 4 models to use the clear shell include the 500+600/8 vram with Rage 128 GPUs, and the 600+700/16 vram with Radeon GPUs. It's those overlapping 700s that get folks confused.

Apple's own web page on distinguishing among the various iterations of dual-usb G3 ibook uses "opaque" and "translucent" as opposing identifications:

According to the info on this page, there WAS an 800Mhz "translucent" (which I take to mean clear-with-inside-painted shell) version of the 12inch ibook, as well as an "opaque" (white not painted polycarb) version. (Different release dates, I believe.) In addition, ALL 800Mhz 14inch ibooks were "translucent," with the switch to "opaque" shells coming with the 900Mhz model.

Sorry to beat what is probably by now a dead horse...

thanks for clearing that up. i was sure there was one because i wanted to do the case mod on the ibook with the highest spec, which was the 800mhz, the last one with the clear shell.

i was lucky enough to get a 700 with the ice case. too bad i got it since i couldn't fix the graphics chip for the owner. it's since been parted out and is waiting for a new board and drive to rebuild since i put about 6 hours into making the case clear, and i'm not about to let it go to waste.
