Budgeted Cube upgrades

I just bought a PowerMac G4 cube (using it right now in fact), it has the stock 450mhz g4 cpu, and a paltry 384 megabytes of ram (especially under Tiger!). And frankly, it is the most beautiful mac I have ever owned. It seemed really unstable until I replaced the stock 20gig hard drive, so that being said, all my important stuff is still on the pismo.
And being based on a powermac g4, the cube's cpu is upgradable- I don't want anything too expensive, and I could live with 1ghz, I just can't find one. That being said, does anybody have one, or know where to find one for around $200? There doesn't seem to be any available on eBay...

If you can dish out an extra $100 you can get a 1.8 GHz from Sonnet...

CPU Upgrades

Actually I saw the DayStar 1.5Ghz today- looks very atractive at $240.
Didn't they used to make dual core g4 upgrades that were at or below 1Ghz? Assuming one could be found, what kind of performance would it offer as opposed to the 1.5Ghz chip?

You probably wouldn't want a dual in your Cube, for thermal issues, unless you wanted to hack it to fit a fan over the heat sink.

You really don't have to do much hacking to put a fan in a Cube, especially since the socket for the fan power connector and the mounting holes are conveniently already there. The main problem for dual processor cubes is the DC-DC board.

Dual Core

You know, now the thought of a dual core doens't seem so appealing.
DC-DC boards...don't want to go there. While we are on the subject, how hard is it to get a hard drive over 128gigs to work completley in the cube?

assuming the cube takes standard size hard drives (and i'm pretty sure it does), then there are plenty of options. a pc i'm attempting to fix right now came with a massive 160gb drive.

something i didn't see mentioned, the dual cpu upgrade cards would be a pain to put in. from the guides i've seen here and on macmod, it looks like you have to machine the heatsink to fit some components on the card.

Cube upgrades

The cube does take a standard size disk drive, with the only problem being, from my understanding, that you have to find drivers for the maching to access anything over 128gigs. i might forgo my cube upgrades in favor of buying the new Ipod "touch" which really should be called iPod "iPhone". Still it is awesome...
