eMac Reliability and Case Mod ?

Well as I've said before I need a replacement of my iMac and I'm on a buget. I've been looking at the 1.42 Ghz eMac because of it's ability to support up to 2 Gigs of Memory, Are these machines reliable? Also I was thinking since it's just white I could take off the back casing (the part with the fan vents) and spray paint it say blue or orange with Krylon or Kylon spray paint. Will this work ? Or Just plainly ruin the casing ?

i would guess that if the paint is safe for plastic that it would work fine.

QFT. Personally, I'd just save up a little more money and pick up a G5 iMac.

I've worked with these things at my school, and they are LOUD! They sound like one of those handheld vacuums. Imagine a whole library full of them! I would definitely steer away from eMacs.

The CRT itself will last a long time, longer than the backlight in an LCD will. However, the power supply board runs at high voltage and has a much shorter lifespan. Apple's CRT power supplies have generally always been lacking in quality, leading to failure after about 4 years or so. A standalone, non-Apple monitor will last far longer.

i have a 700mhz emac and despite how loud it is, it's one of the most reliable macs i've ever bought. it runs day and night as the network admin, and i've never had a problem with it.

i would get an emac with a dead crt and convert it to lcd. i found stuff about the mod on google, and it's an ideal candidate for the lcd swap with the flat front as well as all the potential space inside for components (drive raid?). that's what i plan to do to mine the day the crt dies (which might take some waiting).

LCD lifespans are theoretical

LCD lifespans are theoretically shorter than CRT lifespans, but CRTs have more components that can fail. CFL backlit LCDs have backlights that get half as bright after about 60,000 hours, and those are pretty much a disaster to replace (in my experience). Not to dissuade anyone from buying an LCD (I love the things), but those are the facts.

At least this should be better now that Apple is starting to use LEDs for the backlinghts in their displays.
