Apple Powerbook 5300c problems

I went to a public auction with a lot size of a house of apple computer things and received an Apple powerbook 5300c. The top of it is really messed up, like a glue residue left on it by trying to clean it with an incorrect product to use an left this whit stuff all over with it looks like somebody took their fingernails and tried to scratch of the white stuff. How do I remove this white stuff, or can I repaint over it and paint it black with a plastic paint? Or can I do that without messing the top up even more. How do I repaint the top or get rid of the white stuff? Also, where can I get software for it and games, etc. Thanks.

Oh! How can I change the icon

Oh! How can I change the icon to my Macintosh HD on my Desktop? Because it is a BatMan icon and I don't want that on there... I got it like that from the auction...

Click once on the Macintosh H

Click once on the Macintosh HD icon so it's selected, then go to the file menu and select Get Info (or just hit cmd-I). Highlight the icon in the Get Info window and hit delete.

About that white goop on the lid...can you tell if it is residue, or if the plastic is actually damaged?

If it's just a residue on top of the plastic, you may be able to remove it with Goo Gone or a similar citrus-based glue and stain remover. Just don't use anything like acetone which will melt the plastic.

it looks like the plastic was maybe melted a little, barely though. You can kind of feel little dents inside the plastic where someone took their fingernails into it to get the white stuff off. I did get the icon changed too, thanks for that, but where can I download some games and software for the 5300c powerbook to put on 3.5 inch floppies? Thanks!

The 5300 can run Mac OS 9.1 without any third-party help, if you have enough RAM. Pretty pokey, though. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably run 8.1 or 8.6 on mine.

Okay, first, what kind of programming can you do on a Mac? And where can I get Mac OS 8, then I can update from 8 to 8.6 right? Thanks!

Hey,

No, you can't update from 8.0 to 8.6. You can update 8.0 to 8.1 and you can update 8.5 to 8.6 but you can't go from 8.0 to 8.6 via updates.

I had a copy of Borland's C++ suite for System 7 years ago. I don't know how much the libraries have changed since then, though.

I have a 28.8 pc-card modem that I used with my 1400. Guess where I got it? Here. Smiling
Try posting in the WTB forum perhaps?

Also, you may want to give computer salvage places a try. I went to my university campus surplus store and they had a whole bunch of old powerbooks and definitely a stack of 56k pc-card and serial modems. Thrift stores, Goodwill--all good places to try.

If you're looking for an easier way then C++ to program your Mac you might want to take a look at the free Chipmunk BASIC (http://www.nicholson.com/rhn/basic/). It's not exactly AppleSoft but it is a very similar version of BASIC. They have a version for older Macs if you look further down the page.
