imagine ppc intruction set from the 90's with current manufacturing tech
i think it would be pretty sweet if someone made a computer that ran the old software and ran it with very little power draw. has anyone else ever though of that before? i mean think of the possibilities! im not talking about a 2.5ghz 603e, im thinking what ever cpu that just runs on peanuts!
i was more or less thinking of a cpu with similar speed to one of the older ones, but used way less power. granted it would be nice to have a 2ghz g4, its got to be a power hog.
So what you want is basically for Motorola to start building 680x0 and/or PPC processors using 45nm technology? And what real benefit to using "way less power" would there be, other than a pseudo-new PowerBook that lasts for 8 hours on one battery? And you no doubt realize that there would be *zero* market for a PowerBook like that.
I think the closest you'll ever get is a netbook with a 6-cell battery running an emulated version of the classic Mac OS.
I don't think it would be much of a stretch to run Snow Leopard on massively parallel PowerPCs, except for the fact that Apple uses Intel CPUs with their current line of Macs.
I with you on low power CPUs. The Arm processor seems to be as good as it gets at the moment.
I can imagine all sorts of amazing hardware and software. I miss those old applications and systems. The newer versions have had the useful features stripped out (or slightly broken) unless I upgrade to the Enterprise, and even then I'm limited to 10, or is it 4 now.

i wasnt implying i want motorola to start mass producing these things, but i think it would be nice for us folk who like the older software, and the fact that it could fit inside an iphone. thats all i was saying. More of a dream then actually wanting it to happen.

There have been a lot of folks coming out with additions to the II, II Plus, and IIe, but very few for the IIc. My latest aquisition was a VGA convertor for my IIc. I think it was called "VGA In A Box". I got it from eBay about a month and a half ago. Rich Dreyer had talked one time about a CFFA kit for the IIc, but it has yet to materialize.
He is busy with CFFA 3000 right now. A hard drive for the IIc and IIc Plus, now THAT would be something.
Get an older (non-mirrored drive doors) PowerMac G4, put in a 2 GHz 7448 CPU, and run Mac OS 8.6 or 9.whatever. That'd be pretty much the fastest machine on which to run pre-OS X stuff.
