Beige G3 hardware question (booting sands personality card)

It's my understanding that the Beige G3 will not boot OS 9 if the personality slot is empty. Is this the case, or am i misinformed?

I'm working on a little project based on a Beige G3 logic board, and need to know what my OS options are.

I don't know what silica has

I don't know what silica has to do with a G3, but if you mean booting sans a personality card, then, yes, you are misinformed. The machine will boot, but you won't have any built-in video (it's not obvious why this should be so, but there must be some circuitry on the personality card that enables video), so you'll need a PCI card. Also, you won't have audio from your machine. You could work around that with a PCI card (in OS 9, finding an audio card will be a challenge) or with a USB->audio out device (also a challenge).

But is it bootable? Yes. Note, however, that I've never tried this myself.

Peace,
Drew

...

Thanks for the info. At this point, it's a bit moot, as i am going with a different board for this little project.

I was going to use it as the brains of a home automation project i'm working on, but, i went with a 400MHz B&W G3 instead.
