That's not the way Apple works.

Sure, you could build a Mac from scratch, and it has been done before, but in the end it's just cheaper, easier and more sensible to get a full system, new or used.

Well,

More of the recent Macs can be fit into an ATX case, and will work with the standard IDE drives and such. I'm not entirley sure about the ultra-recent macs, some things might be specific standards, but more or less once you get a MB, you can put it in a standard case, with standard drives and what have you. If you can get a good deal on the MB, then eBay for parts, and you could make a custom system that's a bit cheaper than retail. As long as you aern't totally "klueless" about knowing your way around some computer components and tools, and aern't afraid of getting your hands a little dirty, you can do wonderful things.

Doc.

RTFD

And read up as much documentation you can find on whichever mobo you choose - xlr8yourmac.com and lowendmac.com - the latter has a really good series comparing the different G3s and G4s for value, and the former has all the gumph on ATX power supply connections, casemods, etc etc etc.

For simple construction on a low budget and not needing the absolute fastest machine - still fast enough to be getting along with and somewhat upgradeable - I'd suggest a mobo from a beige G3 Rev B or Rev C. I wouldn't go for anything older than that - too slow, won't run OS X without some hackage, and pricier on the RAM and SCSI hard disks.

For more performance and a better upgrade life, I'd suggest one of the AGP-video G4s, slightly trickier to do the ATX PS hack, but you can find the real power supplies on ebay.
