Actually, you can beat it. There are many more pleasant and less health-threatening ways to make $20. Aside from getting part-time job or doing odd jobs, you can register with a local company that gets people for focus groups -- they pay $40-$100 for an hour or two, no body fluid extraction necessary.

Then there's also Mac consulting. You can charge at least $15-$25/hour even if you're just starting out and/or working for friends or neighbors.

You can look into becoming a 'secret shopper' - one of those folks paid by companies to go and buy stuff from stores and restaurants in order to ensure customer service. Not sure what is involved or the whole story (kind of like being a Neilsen family for TV or something). Basically, you get paid to buy stuff and get to keep what you buy - GOD, AMERICA IS GREAT! Where else can material wealth be so fun!! :-)

And remember, the money is a bonus. It's the donation of plasma that is the gift all it's own.

They use a 16 Gauge Needle, and when u get a phlebotomist who thinks its fun to stick ya 3 times b4 finding a vein its just oh so great

Worst story: Got a bad stick from a newbie that turned into the boggest contusion I have ever seen. took over my whole freaking lower arm.

But hey, I took that cash, bought lunch, some gas and walked to the nearest comic shop with the surplus...

God...the memories....

Unfortunately, the people who come into hospitals usually can't beat whatever problem they have without a transfusion.

You wouldn't believe how hard it was to find some of these.

As a matter of fact, plasma donation is not at all health-threatening. They screen you thoroughly before you donate, and because plasma is 95% water, donating does no damage to your body. It is highly recommended, though, that you drink 8 glasses a day of water to avoid dizziness after donation.

How about if they just heated your blood until all the electrons flew away?

I found out that I am going to have to start getting IVIG which is one of the things they us donated plasma for. I am glad that there are poeple out there that are happy to donate but does it really matter if there is money invovled? What about the satisfaction of knowing that it is helping someone? I have also Been through what they do to you to get the plasma out except they pump the plasma into me when they take my old plasma out. So dont bitch because I had to get it everyother day for 2 months like that. I have tracks marks all over my arms from it and I didnt have a choice. So stop with the pitty and be happy that you are healthy. I dont want simpathy or pitty I just want people to know that there plasma is going to good us.

I donate every time I can. I don't want money, I don't want recognition. I am simply just doing my part. If I needed blood, I'd want someone with the same type to be donating. So I donate in an effort to help out.

Another piece of info - the blood or plasma that is paid for never sees patients - it is typically used for experimentation. The blood or plasma that is had without paying the donor is generally used to help people - as it is less likely to have disease. (this is my understanding from the people within the hospital).

Blood donation is a great thing to do. I also want to start donating bone marrow. I'm also a registered organ donor. If the only good that comes of me being on this earth is the fact that my body helped someone else live - then it's worth it.

I can get money other ways.

Like another poster said, the plasma you sell at these "donation" places does not go to help any one, it is used for cosmetics or research. I knew the plasma they took out of me wasn't to help individuals and thus, I expected to be paid for it. No shame in that at all.

Now if I had been trying to sell a kidney or something that would only have gone to helping someone that was actually in need of a kidney, it would be a different thing. I don't consider what I did any more unethical than being paid to take a survey or any other commercial venture where a company pays an individual for something that it can't make on its own.

Plenty of people have plenty of medical conditions that require frequent medical attention (I have one of my own). Please don't overreact when people are flippant about things that don't affect them directly. It is part of being in the internet community. It is unrealistic to expect everyone to have the same perspective as you.
