Apple Desktop Box

Hi,

I have an Apple Settop Box, but I don't know much about it (I think not many people do) but maybe someone knows anything about it.
The HDD is missing and I wanted to know whether it is possible to install any other SCSI HDD. Afaik the Box ran some modified Mac OS and was based on the PowerBook 500, so maybe it can run a normal Mac OS with some tricks (like the Pippin).

I can post pictures of the Box if you guys are interested.

It was based upon the LC 475,

It was based upon the LC 475, so yes it can run Mac OS, but if you decide to make it run Mac OS and not SetTop OS, no video outs for you.

It's a selfmade keyboard (not by me) for an Apple II clone kit. I kept it because of the old keyboard (ascii) and cause it lokks kinda funny. Eye-wink

Wow, that's probably the most nicely organized collection of macs I've ever seen. What powerbook is on top of the DuoDock and those 3 powerbook 5x0's? It looks like a G3 of some kind...

The PowerBooks from top to bo

The PowerBooks from top to bottom: PB G3 Wallstreet, PB 3400, PB 190, PB 170, Duo 250

The Processor is a G3/233 or 266 (don't know anymore). Definatly not 300+

Does someone actually have a

Does someone actually have a running Settop Box?
My box doesn't have a hdd and it seems that ther was some kind of riser card for the hdd which was mounted on a sled. Does someone know if there is a similar card and sled in another Mac? What hdd did the box use? Is there a way to get a copy of the Settop OS?

I know, a lot of questions, but maybe someone knows anything about that kinda stuff.

Nope, no HDD. I didn't even know about the thing until I saw the auction...

Mine doesn't have a fan, and has a cover over the SCART ports.

I'm gonna try to get a Powerbook-style SCSI adapter, and see what it does with my external HD. I'd also like to take it to an Apple Retail store and see what they say.

settop OS

I'm in the same position-just got a settop box and would love to get something going on it; google has revealed precious little; our best bet would be to take this on as a project perhaps. Let's all try to get them to do something! I wouldnd't mind it booting MacOS and not getting TV out as someone said as long as that didn't take destroying it; anybody have any clueds to the OS for these things? I'm going to go google some more, see what happens, and provide feedback to applefritter if I find something. joinst research might work this one out@

In the STB's manual it says that the LED will light up red for several seconds and then turn orange when ready. Then it can be turned on. When there is something wrong with the box the LED should start to blink. I connected my Box to power some time ago but the LED is still red...

Also I was wondering whether the box actually needs the HDD or if it may be optional since I have never seen a pic of a box' innards with an HDD. All the pics I've found are without one. Also it's not mentioned in the manual with a single word.

Though the box might work with Mac OS 7.1.1 this is not what I want. I'd love to run it in it's original configuration...

Mine doesn't have a fan either. I thought about connecting an LC's fan since it is the right size, but I found no connector for it.

After some googleing I fond a

After some googleing I fond another page featuring the Settopbox

and see, no HDD either.
But this Version does have an fan. At the place where it connects to the mobo mine only has soldering spots labeled J5. I'd say that this is another revision.

I repaced the Box' buffer-battery but with no success, the Box still won't start and the LED still stays red.

I Post again once I find out more.

Yeah, I got one of those fe

Yeah, I got one of those few years back (still have it) mainly for the cool case (which by the way is too small for almost everything).
Couldn't get it to start. The LED stayed red the whole time. I did, however, get something on the TV that I connected to it (through SVideo cable) but I just can't remember what it was.

Anyway, from the limited research that I did at the time (mostly the websites that have already been quoted) I came to the conclusion that most of the models that are hoovering around are non-working. Some website made be believe that the ROM that I had installed was not the "right" revision, or something like that. If I remember correctly, there was a website somewhere that described what happened when you turned it on (I don't think there was any HD involved) and that particular machine had a ROM that was different from mine (maybe theirs was on a red board or something like that).
Sorry, not much help since this was a long time ago.
