**GASP!** G5 Problems!

Sleep issue is almost definitely an OS X problem. Try reinstalling(preferably on another hard drive so you don't wipe your current one).

You're probably using USB speakers, right?

That DVD is dirty or scratched. It can be hard to see scratches under regular 'computer-room' light, but they must be there, if everything else works.

Don't stress- from what I can see your G5 tower itself is perfectly happy.

and the dvd did this right out of the box

If the DVD did it right out of the box, and other discs work as expected, you likely just have a bum copy of the game.

Doupt anything can be done about that. The headphone jack is software controlled, so it wont see any devicies attached until the software loads.

Your disk is screwed. Get another. I'd personally make a copy / disk image asap..

Dont bother. Most almost all games now have CD checks. This involves changing the BIOS of the drive momentarily to allow it to read a special part of the disk, then changes it back again. This makes it virtually impossible to copy without expensive special equipment.

Have to agree there. ive bought LOTS of new software over the years that was bad out of the box(its about 2%, it happens)

Hahah! How hard is it to download and use a crack to let you run games from a backup? Perfectly legal if you own the game...

1) very hard to find mac no-cd cracks, and those that can be found are very version specific. Every time you update the software, the crack is useless.
2) it's still illegal, otherwise it would be easier to find them (e.g. you use your serial and download the copy that fits that serial off the games site. If a server detects more than 1 copy of that crack working, then its investigated)

I ment the cd protection programs that emulate the cd protection functions. For example bad sectors are emulated from a disk image. I can't remember its name but it did raw data copies and copy emulation...

Still I agree its harder on macs - but not alot if you are a memeber of some of the more underground mac sites...

Evens so, I use a PC now, so i'm not quite so clued up about the mac scene.

It's pretty obvious your dvd is bum. Second, on the other stuff, I'm not suprised. Macs can have some very silly out of the box problems that you really can't fix.

I bought the very same model last week... it was working fine until yesterday when I cam hope to find it asleep and with all of its fans blazing!

now the Cd player, the firewire, and just about everything in OS X is being very wonky, and crashing randomly..

anyway its going back to the shop tomorow...

Mine does the very same thing... when I leave it to sleep it does go to sleep but the fans are going at full speed. The machine doesn't feel hot inside so it is very weird that it is doing this!!! Have you found any answers?

ok mine doesnt do that while sleeping, but its normal for a g5 to run the fans at top speed when not running an OS off of a hard drive because the fan control is software based. whenever it runs off the bios or off a CD, the fans run full blazed. but it shouldnt when sleeping.

I have had nothing but problems out of my G5 single Processor. The fans have went on at full blast and wouldn't stop until I had to turn it off. My computor went to sleep yesterday and I couldn't get it to wake up, seriously. I have problems with the mouse flying across the screen when I barely move it. It kicks me out of programs and doesn't work well with Macromedia suite. And of course, the piece of crap doesn't do it at the shop. The store, where I bought it, tells me that everything is okay with it and treat me like I am lying. Apple support is worthless. I am considering selling this computer. It is a pity, because I was under the impression that Apple stood behind their products and were top quality.

and im no longer having the dvd issue.

but ever since i got the latest version of the ipod firmware, every time i dismount my ipod, i get the "multi-lingual pop-up of death" and have to reboot.

I hate to say it, but if you can't reproduce the problems, then don't blame Apple for not being willing to help fix it. They can't fix what they can't see, just like any other company in the world. It's hard to put blame on the support people when they seem to have given it a looking-at and didn't find anything wrong.

DO you use it in a place w/o AC? It could be a temperature problem. Have you checked the polarity and grounding of the outlets you plug it into in your home? Strage things happens with reversed polarity and missing grounds. Do you also bring in your monitor and keybord/mouse when you get it looked at? Is all you computer equipment plugged into the same circuit so it is all on the same ground plane? THere is much more to think about than just that is is acting wonky.

FWIW, any company, even topquality comanies are bound to have some sort of problem with a certain number of their products. It's just that the overall percentage of problems should be lower than others.

Well, I just bought a 2x2GB G5, and when trying to boot from a CD, it won't get past the grey screen and the fans go into turbo mode, only to be quelled by a hard shutdown. If you go to the Apple forums, you'll see that there are others having the same problem, which has nothing to do with temp... glad I found this out sooner than later, but it's VERY frustrating/aggravating...

I have had such fan problems before on a G4 iMac. We were playing Civ II on it. All the sudden the fan turned on full blast and started buzzing. I found the computer responsive, but I used the back button for a hard power off. I have recreated the conditions, but the problem never resurfaced. What exactly could cause it?

Do any of ya'll have a video camera of any type? When the machine starts acting up, capture the action and take it into the Apple Store with you. Crashes and the like can be captured by digital camera. Screenshots saved as jpegs or the like are also helpful.

Most computer stores (especially Apple) are more than happy to help you, but they have to know what the problem is first. I've worked tech support, and the number of people who claim their computer is acting up just so they can get attention, or feel like they're getting their money's worth for the machine, is quite staggering. I'm not saying that anyone here is like that, just some people are.
