Performa 5200 G4 project

Hello everybody!

I have a project but I thought I might just talk about it with some of you guys before I start...

The Project:

Take a Performa 5200 remove the inner componnents, fit a high res CRT and insert a desktop G3 @ 300MHZ mother board, CD-RW, Integrate PCI ports... This will be no mean feat but it seems to me rather fun! If it works I will then buy a Sonnet G4 upgrade to fit into it!!!

Result:

Performa 5200 G4 (500 MHZ or 1 GHZ)

What do you think? Any suggestions or advice would be welcome! Eye-wink

Well i have a 5400...

And it doesnt seem like that would be easy to fit in there, i understand doing it just for the heck of it...

But why not just upgrade a AIW G3? it would probably be cheaper and more reliable in the long run...

It is just for the fun! Smiling (I have on the other hand a 5320 which I will upgrade to G3, but I can't remember if they will run OSX?) As far as the reliability it shouldn't be a problem as it will be basicly a desktop with spécial extentions for relocating Ports and PCI slots... The main problem will be space, how to get all the components in so they don't interfere with each other, I gather no one has tried this hack yet?

Will it fit?

Will the G3 board fit in the 5x00 motherboard slot? I mean size wise will it fit in the case like the original board?
I am working on a custom computer, and if a G3 will fit, I want to use one.

As I remember it, the size is similar, but I don't have either motherboards now and I don't remember enough to give a definative answer.

Similar size for AIO

My wager is that the AIO G3 boards should fit. I don't think a 233/DT board will fit from taking a quick estimate of my machine.

As for CPU, I would highly recommend you go with the slower G4 because otherwise the cooling would drive you insane. Consider installing some additional cooling (especially if the motherboard backplane won't fit properly).

Fit

Well the G3 board won't quite fit in the original slot, I will be fitting it in a "PeeCee" fashion, i.e. bolt it to the upper level of the 5xxx with rubber cushions...

As far as the Processor is concerned I think I can fit it in the larger end (towards the back on the case) and fit the 1 GHz ZIF without too much trouble, and for the cooling well the fans should do the job. There is a good volume of air around that zone...
