Boot problem

I've got two problems:

1. My Colour Classic only boots up very intermittently. Usually, the power light goes on for a couple of seconds and then it dies. One time in 20 it boots up fine.

Presumably this is due to a dodgy connection somewhere, but does anyone know where I need to check?

2. I've just replaced the 20MB hard drive with a 2GB Seagate taken from a PowerMac. I'm trying to boot from a floppy, but it just gets spat out. The happy Mac icon appears, but then the disk is ejected.

The original InstallMeFirst disk (running a British version of 7.1, I think) boots up fine - until the machine can no longer read from it and freezes (the disk turned out to be cracked).

I've created a 7.5.3 boot disk from a disk image at jagshouse.com but it doesn't like it.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Do I need a British boot disk?

Does anyone have an original Colour Classic British boot disk they could upload?

No other connections to exter

No other connections to external drives or internal hardware upgrades I presume (other than the hard drive)? The CC worked normally before this hard drive upgrade? If so, then obviously, the hard drive is the culprit which can be verified by putting back the original hard drive.
Check all connections are seated properly (RAM, CPU, NICs, other cards). Make sure the power supply connection is seated properly. Make sure the termination and other jumpers are correct on the hard drive (termination enabled, etc.)

The CC wasn't booting up before I changed the HD (this is the power problem).

The HD shouldn't prevent the CC from booting from a floppy, should it? I didn't know what I was doing when I inserted the new HD so there may be something wrong with it...

Make sure you have system ena

Make sure you have system enabler 410(i think) on your floppy disk... that should take care of the disk being ejected after the happy mac.

Also, check your PRAM battery. should be around 3.6 volts. Sometimes that can cause some pretty screwy things.

It can since the computer's POST is checking the status of the SCSI chain before booting. Actually, with SCSI voodoo, it is hard to tell what would happen. I've got an external CD that HAS to be off before I can boot one of my (older) compact Macs.

Well, when booting from the b

Well, when booting from the broken boot disk the CC got to the Welcome to Macintosh stage before crashing - so it can't be the HD that's stopping it boot.

The boot disks I've created myself get to the Happy Mac stage before being ejected.

I just tried copying System Enabler 401 on to the floppy but it makes no difference - still gets spat out.

Why does it get spat out when the broken disk didn't?

"blessed" disk

this sort of thing happened to me on a PowerBook 500, it just ejected the disks and stayed at the flasing ? screen. Then I tried "blessing" the system folder on another classic mac (Pre OS X). This is how I did it:

1. Create a System Folder on a floppy disk
2. Put a compatible Finder, System, and whatever else you want that will fit on the floppy disk in the system folder
3. On a Mac with a classic system (before OS 10), drag the finder from the floppy disk to the desktop. Then drag the finder from the desktop back to the floppy, in the system folder.
4. Look at the system folder you created on the floppy. It should have a smiling mac logo or a picture of a classic mac on the icon. If you made the disk on a really old mac, it might not show one of these.
5. Put in Color Classic and boot, it should work
