mac classic scsi problems

i´ve got a macintosh classic with 2mb ram and 40mb HD. it´s running mac os 6 and i have the following problem:

i want to connect external scsi devices (cd-rom drive, harddrive) to my mac but when i turn the mac on with a connected scsi device i just hear the startup chime and see a grey screen. it doesn´t show the friendly mac and it doesn´t start up the system. when i connect the devices while the mac is running and mount the cd´s or the harddrive using quickmounter or formatter5 i only get an scsi-bus error and i have to restart the mac. even when i connect a harddrive to the internal scsi connector i got the same problem.
the only device i can use with the mac classic is an optical syquest drive.
i connected the drives to my quadra650 and they are all working fine.
what´s wrong here?

Termination?

Are the drives properly terminated? If not, you would probably get this kind of problem.

i think they are correctly terminated - on my quadra the devices are working well.

- maybe it could be a problem with the scsi chip? but the internal 40mb drive works well...

Sounds like the external driv

Sounds like the external drive may have thje same SCSO id as the internal drive. Sometimes there's a wheel or device with a couple of buttons on the rear of the external drive enclosure for changing SCSI id. Though they are't always connected to the drive.

the id´s of the devices are correct.

the wheel on the backside of the external HD shows that its id is "1" and the system profiler on my quadra says tthat the id is "1".

What is the ID of the internal drive? Is the external drive configured correctly on what is to provide term power? The Classic might not provide it, or enough. It's one of those SCSI voodoo settings.

that could be the problem... i haven´t tried it yet.
i´ll play around with the jumper configuration and drop a line when it works...

I have met problems with exte

I have met problems with external HDs that are over 1GB size, I don't know what size your external HD is but maybe this isn't an issue... Mind you I am not sure why the larger HDs gave trouble in my case...

playing around with the term

playing around with the term power settings do not fix the problem.

the only thing that changed is that the mac doesn´t show only the grey screen after turning it on with a connected drive - now it displays the friendly mac and when it starts the boot process and shows the "welcome to macintosh" window it interrupts with an SCSI adressing error.

i tried to connect the original internal 40mb HD to the external SCSI Port and it works fine.

i tried the drives under os 7

i tried the drives under os 7.5 but nothing changed...

i only got a sad mac at startup with the Fujitsu Drive.

the error code was: 0000000F
00000002

does anybody knows what this code is for?

seems that my classic only li

seems that my classic only likes apple drives...

the old apple cd300 plus of my second quadra (with corrupt power supplie :{ )
works well. (the sony drive brings the same address error while booting like the hard drives)

the problem is that mac os 6 want´s to build an desktop file on every cd i insert - of course impossible - and so the mac ejects the disc.
under os 7 it works but it´s to fat for the 2mb of ram i´ve got.
is there a possibility to use the cd´s under os 6.?

Try booting from a 7.0.1 Disk

Try booting from a 7.0.1 Disk Tools floppy. Those discs typically have the least space and RAM footprint. If you copy the disk, delete the extra tools on the copy, and then put the CD extention in the extentions folder, it should work.
