converting .EXE to another recognizable extension

Sorry Gordo, an EXE file is a Windows executable. The only way to run an Exe is through a Windows machine or an emulated Windows environment like Virtual PC.

Macs are totally different than PCs. PCs use different kinds of executable code for their applications, and chances are that if the application's for Windows, it's for Mac too (or there is a program for Mac that can do the same).

Thanks for the response to my question regarding .exe files. I am pissed that I have to spend another $400.00 for Virtual PC. After hearing how amazing this computer is suppsosed to be, I am disappointed that it can't even extract .exe files. I downloaded STUFFIT but it doesn't support these files whatsoever. I'm going to need to buy the virtual PC which blows but I guess this way I will be able to watch video clips from Ebaums and DVDSHRINK. In the future I believe MAc will surpass windows so maybe it was a good investment afterall. Thanks again. Gordo

You don't quite seem to get it. Macs can't "extract" EXE files, because they're not archives. They're applications, applications designed to run under Windows only. Yes, VirtualPC will allow you to run them, but I can guarantee you that you won't be satisfied with the performance. You need to understand that Macs are not PCs. They cannot run Windows, or any Windows programs natively. All they can do is emulate (through programs such as VirtualPC), but the process of emulating a Windows PC is intensive and results in poor performance.

If you download videos from eBaum's, they're likely in the Windows Media format. Microsoft makes a Windows Media player for the Mac; download it from http://www.microsoft.com/mac.

DVDShrink is another matter. It's a very processor-intensive program, even on a proper Windows PC, so it will be unacceptably slow under emulation (and its DVD burning function may not even work under emulation at all).

Honestly, it sounds like you're looking to do everything you did on a Windows box on your new Mac, and I can tell you that it won't work. You need to either find comparable programs that were designed for the Mac, or just sell the Mac and buy a new PC.

I love DVDshrink, but I think you'll need a puka bit o' wintel hardware to use it. Not that's a big deal, I think a PC-found-by-the-roadside ought to work, might be slow but you gotz lots of time, right? Sadly, I know of nothing on the Mac that does what DVDshrink does (all in one app), but you can rip DVDs using (eg) MacTheRipper, then recompress using Popcorn, DVD2one or DVDRemaster.

It's cheaper to google bochs, download it for Mac OS X, google freeDOS, download it, follow the instructions on bochs site on how to load OS's and run the .exe this is assuming the .exe's are dos .exe's. It would still be cheaper to buy and run XP on bochs.
