My avatar

Some folks have asked me in the past why I have a picture of Henry Kissinger as my avatar. It is purely because I have always liked him as a man. No real opinion on his politics, but his role as an ambassador was quite significant.

He spoke at a technology conference on his role in international and US history, and was quite interesting. This is where the photo came from (I took it while he was speaking (sans flash).

My most favorate things about the man are his deep voice and his mention in a Monty Python song (http://www.ibras.dk/montypython/finalripoff.htm#Kissinger).

His choice as my avatar had nothing to do with any affinity I may have to wards this man. He is a German-born Jewish emigree. This should not serve as any indication that I am white, jewish, or german. My race, religion, or nation of birth do not matter, and I have never disclosed them on the internet. I am an American citizen, living in America. From that point of view, there is no such thing as a minority.

BTW, I like the Monty Python song, but think it is a harsh descriptioon of the man.

Howling Mad...

Howling Mad Murdoch (played by Dwight Shultz) did a kick *ss impression of Henry Kissinger in one episode of that eighties television show, The A-Team.

I was thinking that you were using the Henry Kissinger photo to indicate that you were an old geezer. Sticking out tongue

old geezer?

No, I am simply "old enough to no better, but still too young to care", rapidly apporaching the former as the latter slips further away everyday.

Although, it would be humourously ironic if I were just some pimply pre-teen kid and chose this picture to seem older.

I do not like to change my avatars much, but I have seen some really cool ones out there. Some even animated, but I cannot figure out how that works, JAVA is a mystery to me, XML I can handle.

Several people have avatar's I like, but I could never 'borrow' one because I associate the avatar with the handle more often than not and do not want to confuse others as to who's avatar it really is. So I will probally always stick with Kissinger as long as I use this handle, since I have always used that combo on this site.

Actually, I would hazard to guess that you're thirtyish, maybe even fortyish... Give or take a decade. Eye-wink So that would put you somewhere between 20 and sixty years of age, am I right? Man, I'm good at this, eh?

As for the animated Avatars, they're really nothing more than animated GIF files. You can create them using a whole host of applications. A shareware favourite that you may have is GraphicConverter, it does a bang up job of creating animated GIFs for Internet use.

Another way to create an animated GIF is to use a QuickTime movie editor to create a short QuickTime movie. You could then use a shareware utility to convert the frames of the QuickTime movie into an animated GIF.

I don't suggest the latter method, but it is an alternative.

Oh yeah, and to get your animated work on the net, you just display it like an ordinary GIF or JPEG image -- no scripting or coding required.

Willy

slick

I may give this a try. I would probally stick to an animated Kissinger, just since I have always used him.

Thanks for the tip.

Okay, how about a little levi

Okay, how about a little levity...

The "X" is due to shareware restrictions on the software I used (Animation Maker 3.2.2).

levity...

I like it, but it is such a young picture of him...

I like the quote in your signature, I will have to add that to my list of favorate sayings I keep in my Newton.

Ya know, eeun, there are ways to rid your work of the dreaded X. You could *gasp* register your shareware utility. You could also take the much more dreaded approach and borrow a serial number from a friend on the Internet.

Of course, stealing software without paying for it is wrong and people that commit such terrible crimes should be...

Dog gone it, I lost my train of thought...

Hate when that happens.

Willy

I think for a man like Kissin

I think for a man like Kissinger it's hard to separate the man from the politics; it's the only reason anyone knows who he is. It would be like trying to talk about FDR while avoiding the topics of the depression, the new deal, and WWII. Similarly, it would be hard to discuss Kissinger without acknowledging the various foreign policy issues that he had a hand in during his public life, whether good or bad.

Christopher Hitchens wrote a book making the argument that he should be tried for war crimes. I turned up this interesting discussion.

And I always thought your avatar was Ben Stein Eye-wink

I was at work when I put that together, and had just enough time to search for a gif-maker utility on Versiontracker (which wasn't actually the one I was looking for) and slap the above together. I probably should have been earning my keep, but I'll consider that time as "lunch break" which is usually spent at my desk anyway. Looking for serialz would be an even worse use of my time on the clock. Eye-wink

Oooh! Oooh! I know that one! Détente!

I wonder how many 'Fritter readers are old enough to realize the significance of that policy.

Changing of the guard?

Well, it seems Kissinger is getting old for some.

I firmly believe change is bad...

so I will give it due consideration. I cannot make any promises and since my scanner is tucked away in the garage, I can assure you it will take more than just a week for me to make a change once I finally make up my mind on something, if I even change it.

I just cannot get that song out of my head...

a changing of the guard

Okay, I finally retired my Kissinger avatar in favor of a self portrait taken by my camera phone.

I love the look my friend! So Wilson-esque!

I haven't been on AF much lately, and am glad to see you posting again. What's new in Doug-Doug's world these days? (If you've already written about it, just point me in the right direction.)

You know, I'm just going to pretend that you got Kissinger to do a self portrait with a camera phone and send it to you and you just say it's of your self. Something needs to explain the change to keep the universe in order. That should about do it.
