Need help please with Mail, attachments on Leopard

I have a problem that is driving me nuts. I am using Mail with OS 10.5.5 and am trying to attach a simple pdf file to my email message. The problem is the pdf shows up as a "view in place" document not the icon for the pdf file. Meaning...after my email message the attached file is showing as text instead of just an icon.

I know you can control-click on the attachment and choose "show as icon" but when you do that and forward it to someone else it reverts back to showing the attachment as an embedded document once again.

On my laptop using Panther I don't have this problem. All attachments are in the body of the email as icons.

Intel iMac freezes

Hello,

I've got an Intel Core Duo iMac running OS 10.4.11 which freezes on me sometimes. The only solution is to turn the machine off. It seems to happen randomly--not while in any particular application. The machine came with two 512mb sticks of RAM. I took the machine to the Apple service agent, but it did not freeze while he had it. He suggested new RAM, so I bought a single 1GB stick of RAM to replace the two 512mb sticks. With only the new 1GB stick installed, the problem persisted. I called in another tech over to my house who ran DiskWarrior which found no problems, and the tech could not determine the source of the problem, but thought that there might be a conflict in a software update or something. We did a reinstall of the system, but still the problems happens. In addition to the freezes, it sometimes goes black like it's gone to sleep, but doesn't wake up and has to be restarted. On a couple of recent occasions while booting up, after the sprocket, it goes to the blue screen and freezes at the blue screen. Any suggestions? Does this sound like a hardware or software problem? Would upgrading to Leopard be a solution, or could that compound the problem?

Thanks ahead for your input!

BluRay Burning on OS 10.5.2, have you done it?

So, from a little research I understand that Mac OS 10.5.2 has built in support for BluRay disk burning. I was wondering if anyone here has had positive or negative experiences with it, and if so with which brand and make of drive(s)?

Macinjosh's MacBook: Not Happy

Seriously, seriously not happy. :(

I love the speed of my new 'Book, but 802.11n has been a complete joke, and now, I have got multiple cracking and chipping at the bottom-right of the top palm rest, as well as indentations where the top screen has "nubs" for lack of a better term to keep the screen from resting on the keyboard.

Seems like the crack is either right where the bottom outer case plastic supports it, to the left, or right past where it mates up with the top, same deal.

I'm gonna have to drive to the capital of Iowa, some 3 hours away, to get this looked at by an actual Apple Store / Genius Bar.

I saved for this, man. I gave up on a car I've been wanting for years, and got this instead, thinking, "It's a Mac? How could I be going wrong?"

Just don't know anymore.

Power icon issues after sleep? (macbook)

So I've had my macbook (2.4 core2duo, 10.5.2) for a few weeks now, lately if it has been closed while on battery power and then woken up the power icon in the menu bar flashes. It jumps between the power plug icon (for when its plugged in) and the battery icon. It seems to be randomly timed and theres nothing near the magsafe port. Any ideas? It stops flashing if plugged in or restarted.

Anyone Have A USB, Ralink or Realtek Wifi Adapter WORKING in 10.5.3?

As it says, has anyone got one of these working in 10.5.3? I'm needing to buy a G-capable USB 'stick' to cover for my sporadic internal Airport Extreme. I see various reports of these working in 10.5, 10.5.2 et cetera, but I want to buy this once, and be solid.

So, if you have got a Ralink or Realtek powered USB wifi dongle working in 10.5.3, please posts as much info about it as you can, including make and model, chipset inside, and any tweaking with drivers and the like you had to do, if any, to get 'er runnin' right.

Best regards,

MacBook/MBP Wifi Compatibility Thread

I hope it's all right if I use the 'Fritter as a place for people to talk about their MacBooks/MacBook Pros, what wireless setup they have, and if they have any issues with it?

My MacBook, and my WRT54g v1.1, tomato v1.19 hate each other, particularly whenever the MacBook is awakening from sleep. I am very inclined to by a router, hopefully N-capable, that won't have this problem. For instance, a poster on the Apple discussion boards says that he's got no issues, at all with a Linksys WRT150N; heard another saying the same about the newest AirPort extreme base station.

So, if it's all right, anyone who can, please add the following:

1) What MacBook or MacBook Pro have you got? I'm a dual 2.0 white, 1GB RAM.
2) Which Mac OS X version? (Mine's 10.5.2, God do i wish I had 10.4)
3) What router have you got? (I covered that)
4) If there's alternate firmwares available, have you tried them? (I've been to the stock Linksys firmware, DD-WRT, tomato, tried an older OpenWRT but couldnt get it working properly, WhiteRussian 0.9)
5) If you do have problems, have you had experience with a router that gave you _NONE_, that you can name? After waking from sleep? Know the model? (I've been round a WRT54GS v.5 that did the same thing my WRT54G does)

I think that about covers it; if there's any questions, or problems, let me know.

Parallel to USB/Firewire Adaptor?

I'm trying to find one that works.

I need to connect an Epson Expresson 836XL large format scanner to my Intel iMac. At first I was looking for a USB or Firewire to SCSI adapter, but then thought of this option since my scanner also has a 36-pin Centronics type parallel connector.

I found a possible fit with the SCSI to Firewire adaptor (http://firewireshop.stores.yahoo.net/firfirscsico.html) (thanks to Eudimorphodon) but am wondering if Parallel to Firewire/USB might be a more viable (and cheaper) option. See here: http://sewelldirect.com/usbtoparallel.asp <b>or</b> http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10311&cs_id=1031104&p_id=1610&seq=1&format=2

Has anyone done this or know if it is viable? I worry about Mac compatibility.
Thanks.

SCSI to Firewire or USB Converter - For 24" Alum iMac

I have a new 24" aluminum Intel iMac and can't keep my G4 any longer.
I have an older Epson 836XL large format scanner that I would like to keep using, rather than pony up $2K+ for a new one. It works just fine.

I've yet to find an adapter compatible with Macs that will allow you to use SCSI scanners or printers. Mass storage devices, yes. Other peripherals, no.

Does anyone know of one that works, either Firewire or USB?
Thanks.

Wine on Intel Macs

Has anyone successfully compiled Wine with OpenGL support? It will compile for me, but it always complains about OpenGL... I think Apple has modified their OpenGL in some way. I can't think of any reason it would not work, aside from if OpenGL has been messed with and is too different from the BSD version.

Macbook or Mac Mini

I've decided in the last months that it is time to upgrade my Mac. My 'ole Blue and White G3, although as upgraded as it can get, is wishing to be retired and given lighter duties. Thus, I have come to a crossroads in my choices for its replacement. I wanted something modern and new that is somewhat mobile.

Obviously, from the title, the two choices are the Macbook and the Mac Mini. I would most likely get both with stock 1GB RAM and the 120GB HD option (I'll upgrade the RAM afterwards to save a few dollars). Plus, I'll be looking at the 2.0GHz Mac Mini as opposed to the 1.8GHz one.

What I'm asking is what would you choose? Does the Mac Mini perform admirably in Leopard? Does the fact that the Macbook have the Intel X3100 instead of the GMA 950 make any real difference?

Please take into account that I'll be saving up the money somewhat slowly (bills, bills, and more bills). So, would the Macbook be worth the extra time in order to save up the money?

New Mac Pro user has some pre-delivery questions

Heyo,

Going from a 1.5Ghz G4 Digital Audio to a new 3Ghz Mac Pro. Delivery is about Mar 11th and I've got a few pre-delivery questions if I may. I'm kinda Mac savvy but have been out of the loop for some time. I've been holding off for a looong time for a new system that'll really give a bang for my buck, the time right for me.

Here's what I'm gettin'...

Mac Pro 3.0Ghz (dual quad-core), 2Gigs RAM, Single super drive, 320GB in HD bay 1 and two 500GB's in HD bays 2 & 3, NVIDIA 8800 GT 512MB video card and a wireless thingee (which i'll probably hardly use).

How I'd prefer to have it set up is the two 500GB's be raid mirrored and have MacOS installed on it for my Mac needs (primary usage and file safety in mind). The smaller 320gigger would have Vista installed.

My questions are these...

Q1: Single Superdrive. What is the connector for it on the Mac Pro? ATA style like the older G4's or serial like the newer HD's? I've got another superdrive from my DA mac and wondered if it'll plug in as a 2nd optical drive.

Q2: Transferring current HD contents. I vaguly remember (never had to try it) that a new mac could connect to the older mac thru the built in firewire ports and transfer contents over to the new machine (like the old mac acted like an HD or something). Am I off base or correct to presume this'll work? I think I'm driving half blind on this part. Or should I just buy an HD enclosure and transfer this way?

Q3: Raiding two 500GB HD's. If I mirror raid (thru Disc Utility) the HD with the OS on it, does it have to reformat (thus deleting the orig installed contents) to set the raid up? I've never used a raid before. I'm going to venture a quess that the Mac OS will be installed on the smaller drive so setting that up might not be so painfull but we'll see.

Any suggestions and/or prep tips would be sweet. Thanks in advance.
