Apple I Construction

Just starting to gather parts to populate my Obtronix Apple I PCB. Anyone know of a source for the Signetics 2519? If anyone has a spare I'd be willing to trade a 2513.

I finally finished my Obtronix Apple 1 reproduction!

All,

I finally finished my Obtronix Apple 1 reproduction!

Actually, building the Apple 1 didn't take much time at all! It was the custom work on the mounting board, the curved and angled plastic leg brackets, and, and ...

I uploaded photos of it to

Looking for a (good) Signetics 2504

Hello All.

My Obtronix Apple 1 reproduction has a bad Signetics 2504. I built the kit a while ago, but I think I would have noticed the problem then. So I guess it got tired!

The Signetics 2504 is a 1024-bit dynamic shift register, 8-pin dip. It's used here to as part of the display control. The problem I saw was odd numbers (1,3,5,7,9,A,C,E) in every other screen column were displayed as the preceding ASCII character (0,2,4,6,8,@,B,D). Data from the keyboard was stored correctly in main RAM. It was just the video memory was displayed incorrectly.

Anyway, does anyone have a source of a Signetics 2504?

logjam- a long time ago, you said you had a source for the 25xx chips. Are they still around?

Thanks!!

Trying to tract down an Apple-1 owner

All,
I'm working on mounting a Obtronix Apple 1 reproduction of mine, hoping to put in up on ebay in the next week (as a reproduction!).

Last year I came across the Apple Syndrome site:
http://homepage2.nifty.com/56thWAREHOUSE/HAJIME.html

On that page there's links to various Apple product lines, with lots of information. Back in '07 the Apple 1 link was valid, but now is broken. Following that link led to pages with many photos of a legit Apple 1. Though the site is in Japanese, I gather (using babelfish) that the site owner is not the Apple 1 owner. I tried several times to contact the site owner in order to contact the Apple 1 owner.

Why? In the photos of the monitor attached to the Apple 1, I recognized a video problem that I ran into when I built my repro Apple 1. It's an array of small dots across the entire monitor screen. I wanted to contact the owner to provide my bit of insight on the problem.

Does anyone know the Japanese owner(s) of Apple 1(s)? At one time I only had the last name of an owner who had two Apple 1's. Could it be him? Does anyone have photos of a Japanese owner with his Apple 1? As I said the web link was broken and I've tried in vain Google cache and the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine (archive.org)

Thanks,
Scott Austin

New replica 1 TE

I've finished up a revision of the replica 1 with some suggested improvements, and new features. The replica 1 TE has no jumpers, and only 1 microcontroller to handle all of the video and I/O routines. A 44 apple 1 slot has been added along with the edge connector while keeping the replica 1 connector for backward compatibility. The breadboard has been brought back and adjustments to the placement of the keyboard connectors has been moved to the front of the board.

Gone is the USB to serial port adapter that was causing some people to think the replica 1 had a full USB system. I think cable adapters were cheaper anyways.

yet another possible Apple 1 replica project

Hi Folks,

Thinking of doing a Apple 1 replica - done along the lines of my Apple II rev 0 replica and the obtronix Apple 1. There are some hard to find components involved in this project, but more importantly I would need good images of front and back of an original Apple 1 PCB. Best case would be that of a bare PCB, second best would be without chips in sockets and of course last choice would be a fully populated board. Best images are done by scanner or photocopier rather than by camera. Does anybody know of or can produce such images?

Regards,
Mike Willegal

Obtronix Apple I reproduction for sale

I assembled an Obtronix Apple I kit from ebay about two years ago. I've never done much with it and have decided to sell it. Not to "spam", but I figured someone here who missed out on the kit or doesn't have the expertise to assemble it may be interested.

Hello

I'm interested in the history of Apple. Yeah, that's it.

But one more thing, I'd be grateful if one of you could answer me some question :)

Basically, at the exact time when you have bought Apple 1 back in 1976, was it fully pre-built? Did it only contain circuit board and a big brown box and nothing else? Did you have to buy a display and a keyboard for Apple 1 to work?

Thanks in advance.

Applesoft on the replica 1 (Apple 1 possible)

Well, thanks to Tom Greene (AKA cowgod), Applesoft has been ported and tested for the replica 1. It resides in the area E000-FEFF in EPROM which is occupied by Integer BASIC and Krusader (on later replica 1 models). Simply replacing the current EPROM on your replica 1 gives you Applesoft! The graphic commands were removed but LOAD & SAVE commands were added to store programs in the CFFA1 optional board. MENU was also added to allow the user to go into the CFFA1 board menu to do other functions. This does not mean the replica 1 will change, Integer BASIC is the default BASIC but this is a very nice option to have. One the code is release it is possible to make a EPROM card with Applesoft onboard for the Apple 1 or clones.

Here's Tom's page with the writeup:

http://cowgod.org/replica1/applesoft/

And here's my forum about the idea and how it came to be:

Fun stuff!

I have an unassembled Obtronix - what next?

I bought an Obtronix Apple I replica off ebay a while back.
I didn't get any instructions with it and never heard back from the owner of Obtronix.

I'd like to gather all the parts to assemble it...but wondering what I need and the specs of what I need.
Need:
(1) Apple I Schematic
(2) Power supply...any suggestions on model numbers?
(3) Keyboard....any suggestions on model numbers?

I didn't get one of the later Obtronix units with the free cassette board...any idea if any more cassette board exist?

How rare are these Obtronix units? Any idea of how many were made?

Thanks for the help!

A CC95 "Hello, World!" challenge.

Please dust off and fire up your Apple1 hardware and try to get a CC95 compiled "Hello, World!" program to work.

It's been my experience that CC95 programs work with the various emulators out there (it works on POM1 and MESS), but doesn't work on the real thing.

I've got the 6502 Krusader 1.3 version installed on my Replica1 to try to figure this out (this version can trace through code). I'll post my results when I've figured it out.

I'm wondering if anyone else out there has tried this, or has another way of seeing what's happening on real hardware in the meantime.

Good luck!

Here's my copy of hello.c and a build script. You'll have to fix the include line, put in the less than and greater than characters.

#####
#include ***conio.h***

void
main (void)
{
        unsigned char hello[] = "Hello, World!";
        unsigned char * p = hello;
        cputc(0x0D);
        while (*p)
                cputc(*p++);
        cputc(0x0D);
}
