imac Tray Loader and Xpostfacto-do I still need the 8gb limit?

When installing XPOSTFACTO and 10.4, do I still need to partition the boot drive to a partition under 8gb like you had to when installing OS X normally? I read the XPF site and it was pretty vague on this topic. I think they mentioned something called "fixes mis-application of the 8gb limit".

Thanks.

Airportcard 811b low Download Performance

My Setup is a Powerbook g4 Titanium with an Airportcard 811b, an AirportExpress 811g and an ethernet cablemodem. No WEP or such.
My internet access account is broadband cable 6000 Kb/sec up and 600 Kbit/sec down.
I made testseries @ http://perftest.green.ch/. When I access the internet wireless I have an average of about 3700 Kbit/sec down (up 595).
When I wire directly to the modem I have an average of around 5500 Kbit/sec (up 614).

I found this thread here:
http://www.applefritter.com/node/22906
Submitted by Macinjosh on May 16, 2008 - 3:04am.
"At a guess, your internet connection is 512Kb/sec (512 Kilobits per second.) However an 802.11 card, even in B mode, is capable of 11Mb/sec (11 Megabits per second.)
Put these two in the same terms:
Internet Connection, Max: 512Kb/sec
802.11b Connection, Max: 11,264Kb/sec
- or -
Internet Connection, Max: .512Mb/sec
802.11b Connection, Max: 11Mb/sec
-- Still with me? All of that to say, a b-capable AirPort card is 22 times faster than your Internet connection is, using the theoretical maximums of both (and yes, I know that's not happening.) If you have a g-capable card, theres even more of a speed difference.
So THAT means, yeah, your AirPort card can pull down the same speed as being wired directly in, _from the Internet."

In my case:
Internet Connection, Max: 6000 Kb/sec
802.11b Connection, Max: 11,264 Kb/sec
- or -
Internet Connection, Max: 5.86 Mb/sec
802.11b Connection, Max: 11 Mb/sec

-- So even when the real life performance of the Airport card is only 50 % of theory, it should be as good as wired access. --

The signalstrength should not be a problem, I tested also directly besides the basestation and it doesn't make a big difference for the download performance. Measured with iStumbler: Signal is between 50 % and 95% depending on the distance to the basestation in my appartment, noise 50 %.
There are no other wireless devices in the appartement. There is only one other network nearby, its closed though it does not give informations except vendor, its Xeros, might be a Xerox wireless network adapter for a printer.
I played with the settings of the AirportExpress. The only thing which helped was changing from 811b/g compability to 811b only, this gave an increase to an average around 4000 Kbit/sec (max is about 4800).
I also tryed with a Lucent silver PC card (out of my PB 5300ce) - didn't make a difference.

The graph shows with the results 1 to 30 and 51 to 60 wireless and in between 31 to 50 wired access. The results are better than I first wrote above (this serie was done in the later evening and around midnight when the connection is generaly better and perhaps my tweaking has hit something).

--But clearly the difference in performance rests unexplained--

HELP: MDD G4 mysteriously chiming at random intervals.

Help... im at my wits end with this one. My G4 is, at random intervals, and for no readily apperent reason, making a 'ding donnnng noise... Sounds like a doorbell, or the doors closing chime on NYC subway cars. There are no apps running when this happens, and

AGH! it just did it again!

.. anywhoo... and i cannot pin down what's causing it. It is happening at random times, and random intervals.

Any ideas?

PowerMac bootup problem.......

Hi new to the whole Mac world. Just got a powermac B&W from my friend without any CD's. Ok, when it boots up, the hard drive chatters and displays nothing but a alternating flashing folder and smiley face. I read through forums that suggested trying removing firewire module, did that, did zap the PRAM and also removed the battery, nothing, tried resettting NVRAM also, still nothing. When booting up, the HDD chatters then goes to the icon. I have no MacOS software cd's. It's an M5183 model. Also tried alternating the memory sticks. When booting up, also, option key or X keys don't work, but keyboard works because i can do opt+cmd+P+R. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The PB 5300cs Saga and Stuffit (Trials and Tribulations)

In my other thread I was talking about what happened when I finally opened up the 5300c that I bought about two weeks ago. This is along the same lines, but it has to do with the 5300cs and trying to use Stuffit.

There was a suggestion made in another thread (don't ask...I cannot remember right now) about downloading the .bin files for OS 7.5.1 or OS 7.6 and then using Stuffit Expander to turn these .bin images into Mac Floppies. That is all well and good, and I followed the directions, copied all the files to cd and uploaded the whole thing onto my G4 which is running OS 10.4.

*** Believe it or not it just occured to me that I can load the cd on my Beige G3! ***

I'm going to finish this first because (forgive me) I'm a bit frustrated.

I finally get the Shareware version of "Stuffit Expander" converted from PC to Mac, rushed in to the G4, loaded up the floppy disk, and waited for it to come up on the desktop.

It did! I thought to myself..."now this is great! I can made a new set of install disks for OS 7.5.2 and get the 5300 back up. I have the floppies ready; I'm all set."

I clicked on the istall file and the machine starts it's magic and then stops cold.

Dialog Box: You must be running in Mac Classic Mode to use this software on this computer. Please load OS 9.1.

I cannot run in "Classic Mode" on the G4.

I decide to go to Alladin Software which points me to Smith Software to see about getting a current copy of Stuffit. The "Deluxe Edition" is $79.00 and is a Download. The "Standard Edition" is $49.00 and is a Download. The Shareware Expander id Free, but you have to sign up to receive a whole bunch of Hoo-Ha from several other companies.

I decide to get the "Standard Edition" and procede to the checkout. I don't want a Download, I want a cd so I'll have it in case. lol

They wanted to charge me not only the $49.00 for the download, but another $10.99 for a "Backup Disk". There is no way just to order a cd. Talk about Bru-ha!

Thats when I decided that I should just shut everything down for the night and cool off.

Any comments are surely appreciated. I know some of you have probably been through this already.

Strange B&W Powermac Problems

I'm new here at Applefritter, so hello from Fort Wayne!

I thought I might try your ears here with the crazy problems I've been having the last week with my Blue & White Powermac G3. I bought it about 6 months ago for $5 at a garage sale; it was still pretty much standard, but with upgraded RAM (to 128 MB) and Panther installed. I wiped it, and upgraded the RAM to 384 MB with Tiger, using it as a file server.

But a couple of weeks ago, my iMac G3 400MHz started having problems, and I decided I was tired of Tiger on it, so I was going to downgrade to Panther. During the install (but after I wiped my HD), it told me the disc had problems. I didn't have any CD-Rs to burn a new copy from my backup images, so I brought out the Powermac to see if it could use the disc any more reliably, as in my experience the tray drives seem to perform better than slot-loaders.

I got Panther installed after a few tries, realizing that it was hanging during the BSD subsystem installation and skipping that part. I then upgraded the RAM to a full GB. It was working pretty well, and I had some stuff installed on it, and some of the updates, but the first strange thing that I noticed was that Software Update wasn't finding all of the updates that I knew should be there, even the 10.3.9 combined update, thus leaving me with straight 10.3. So I started looking online for a few things, such as an updated iTunes, etc.

Well, while looking online, I happened to mention some of the new Get A Mac ads to my brother, who told me he hadn't seen one of them. I went to apple.com/getamac, and it told me I needed to upgrade to the newest version of Quicktime, so I went to mac.oldapps.com and found the newest version Panther could handle: 7.4.1, and downloaded it. I installed it, and I'm pretty sure it told me to restart, so I did.

When I started back up and logged in normally, the Finder tried to start itself, and then, with only half the menu bar loaded (the clock and other stuff on the right hand side hadn't finished), it 'Unexpectedly Quit'. I could look at the Dock, and launch applications from there, but after a couple minutes of running any of them, they too would 'Unexpectedly Quit'. I decided I'd probably installed something wrong, so booted into OS 9 and slowly dragged my 3 GB+ of personal files over to my PC using a 256MB memory stick, and tried to reinstall Panther. Halfway through the installation process, it comes up with "There were errors installing the software, please try installing again." After a number of tries, and having it stop in different places, even with trying a minimal install, I tried installing Tiger again. That did the same thing. OS 9 was the only thing I could get to run stably on it.

Then I had an idea. I took the HD out of my iMac and put it into the Powermac. It booted Tiger perfectly fine. So I took the Powermac's HD and put it into the iMac and installed Tiger, and put it back into the Powermac. But now I cannot get it to install any updates or anything, even though they appear in Software Update and download; the Installer either says that there were errors installing the software or it quits unexpectedly. I was going to try and install the 1.1 firmware update, but it requires OS 9, which hangs while trying to boot from my CD. While trying to get that to work, I found out I already had the newer firmware, but OS 9 still refuses to boot from the CD.

So it's a very strange predicament. Sorry I presented it in story form, it's longer, but I thought it would be more interesting to read, and would leave out fewer details. I've figured that it's not a memory issue, nor a hard drive or DVD-ROM drive issue, and its not any of the IDE cables. I can't think of anything. Thanks for reading this far, to anyone who actually makes it though this.

PowerPC vs. 'The Web 2.0': What MHz is Minimum and Optimum for Smooth Usage?

I have been doing some research on the capabilities of the G4 vs. Intel Chips (checking GeekBench scores, etc.) It seems that MHz for MHz the G4 is just about equal to the Pentium M/ Core Solo Mflops (about 60% of a Core Duo) which is pretty good for a chip whos design is much older.

I am running OS X 10.3.9 on my 400MHz G3 Pismo and the OS itself really zips compared to Window XP on anything less than a 3GHz Pentium 4 or 1.8GHz Pentium M/ Core Solo. Heck even then the slowness of Windows XP on the 3GHz P4 boggles the mind; just click on the volume icon in the System Tray and see how long it takes to bring up the volume slider! And it is a real pain watching Windows try and find the icons on an explorer window.

A 400MHz G3 (with 384MB of RAM at least) is not up to the modern web though; videos are unviewable at 1-2 FPS, active content webpages (such as the new yahoo mail interface) are sluggish, etc. I always keep the Activity Monitor up so when things stall I can see if something is 'working' as the CPU stutters along at 100% usage, trying to delegate what it can to various tasks, or if it has actually crashed.

I really think it takes a minimum 500MHz or so G4 to view the web these days (about the equivalent mflops of a 1-1.5GHz Pentium 4?). With Windows XP you really need a 3GHz Pentium 4 or 1.8 GHz Pentium M or Core Solo to use the web stably. The wife's PC is a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 (with 768MB RAM and a 'pretty good' 128MB AGP Video Card) and it's OK if not perfectly smooth for web videos etc. My Father-in-law's 3 GHz (1GB RAM, 128MB AGP video card) works nicely on the web. Of course video card, RAM and other things make a difference, but I am looking for 'real-world experience', not technical exactness.

I am looking for ratings of watts and 'real-world' Mflops for later 1.4 to 2.0 G4s for comparison, the only Freescale docs I could find go up to 1 or 1.2 GHz. Processor MIPS would be nice also but seem to be hard to find anymore, maybe they just don't have much 'real-world' relevance.

Clamshell SE help

Hello, new to macs. My dad had a clamshell on his desk at work (at the bottom, under everything else) for at least a year. So I snagged it. I'm not much for Macs but it's a laptop, and it was free :)

Original specs when I got it:
PowerPC G3
Mac OS 9.0.4
Mac OS ROM 5.3.1
10GB HD
466MHz
64MB memory

Added:
512MB memory
Airport card
New adapter (65W)
Xubuntu 6.04LTS --> upgraded to 8.04LTS

my model: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook.html

Runs nice cept a few problems, I've asked on the Ubuntu forums but no luck.
1) it runs hot, very hot to where I dont want to touch the underside. Fans are always running. Even when it's just sitting there
2) it wont recognize that the battery is in. I even went so far as to get a new battery cause I thought the other one was dead. It has a charge when I first got the computer and turned it on but it would never charge. Figured since the adaptor was burnt in places that was the problem...nope. Went from home to school and the clock didnt reset so I'm guessing it's taking something from the battery? Tried reseting PMU, taking battery out and trying to reset, etc etc. Got a new adaptor so I know that's not it, got a new battery. Could it be a problem with Ubuntu or is it the clamshell? Guess it's the DC board but is there anything I can do to check that before taking the whole thing appart?
Ubuntu sometimes after restarting shows either:
1) running from AC only (plug icon)
2) battery at 100%, battery state cant be determined, running from AC (shows full green battery icon with plug on side) or
3) running from AC, battery state cannt be determined (empty battry).

tried
http://reviews.ebay.com/iBook-Clamshell-Battery-Issue_W0QQugidZ10000000007193925?ssPageName=BUYGD:CAT:-1:SEARCH:5
now reads (with empty battery icon)
Device Info
product: Battery Bay
Percentage charge: 0%
Technology: unknown
Current charge: 0.0 Wh
Design charge: 3.4 Wh
still says running from AC
battery state cant be read
and battery charge time unknown

Should I try another LinuxOS besides Ubuntu? Any help appreciated.

iBook G3 14-inch power issues

Hello everyone,

I joined this forum in the hope to find some help regarding the iBook G3 14-inch
that I am currently refurbishing. It is a 700 MHz model from the transparent/
silver series.

I successfully fixed its GPU failure with the common shimming method, but this
beast obviously bears another bug: it will only work from the power provided
by the battery, it will not power up when the DC plug is plugged in. It won't
load the battery as well. What I get when I plug in the DC plug is a red light on the
plug, not amber as when the battery is loading, it is a darker red tone.

My first attempt was to replace the DC-In-board, but that did not change the
behaviour. Yesterday in a desperate moment I placed a battery from a 12-inch iBook
in the battery bay and everything worked like normal! The battery was loading, it
would power up, but still not work off the DC power alone. This is puzzling... it
will work and load a 10.8V battery, but not its normal 14.4V battery.

A few minutes ago I tried the power supply from a 15-inch Aluminum PowerBook,
the 65W one, in the hope that somehow my charger is too weak, but it shows the
same issues with this charger.

Of course I also tried 2 different 45W-iBook chargers, which work perfectly on a
friend's iBook 12-inch, but not on my broken 14-incher.

I'm kind of lost right now... can anyone explain what might be wrong, what I could
attempt to fix the machine? I bought it in this broken state for around $75 (50 Euros),
in the hope to fix it until christmas as a present for my better half.

Thank you very much for any advice and greetings from Germany,

Maximilian.

Best hard drive for a sonnet tempo trio

I recently got a sonnet tempo trio on eBay and I will be popping it into my 8600, which is running OS 9.x right now with a 500MHz upgrade card in it.

What is the best IDE hard drive for the money?

I also have an IDE DVD burner I will be adding to the machine. since my CD face plate is already used for a CD drive, I find myself in need of another CD faceplate. If someone has a spare for trade, shoot me a PM.
