Looking for "Capture AE"

This control panel runs on System 7 - OS 9 and logs AppleEvents. It's useful when doing coding that uses interapplication communication on Mac OS 9. The old URL to get it was http://www.westcodesoft.com/FTPOCTools.html but it's gone off the net. The WayBack machine (archive.org) did catalog the site, but the actual download is on an FTP server and not in the archive...

Grr.

Does anyone have a copy on a hard drive somewhere?

Peace,

Dev Notes Gone!

Apple's hardware dev notes for 68k and PowerPC systems are no longer accessible on the Internet. You used to be able to find them here: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/

Can anyone else confirm? Is there an alternative source?

Safari 4 Beta on Older Systems

I have been using Safari 4 on my 400MHz Pismo since the beta was released and all I can say is it is amazing! When you aren't doing anything with it is barely uses ANY processor! Still can't play videos, but that is to be expected...

I usually use Opera 9 (Opera 10 Beta wouldn't even open on my system) as it is the only thing that has any usable speed. I also use Firefox 3 (G3 version called Minefield) so I can use my plug-ins and have access to my Foxmarks bookmarks. But Firefox uses about 60% of system resources when it is sitting there doing nothing! Immediately goes up to 100% when doing anything Flash of course, but that is the problem with the video card in this old of a machine.

I have been messing around with some changes and user style sheets (mostly from http://PimpMySafari.com and have gotten rid of most of the advertisements. I really don't mind ads, especially text ones, but really get annoyed at yahoo's placing dating ads with beautiful women all around my emails saying 'flirt with me'! I guess since my profile shows that I am a middle aged geek that that is what I am looking for...

Has anyone had any experiences in using Safari 4 Beta on older machines?

I am really looking for a way to control Flash objects on a site-by-site basis and don't have the cash for some of the advanced Safari Plug-ins (It's a different world when most of the Firefox plug-ins are 'Donation Ware'.)

I am running 10.4.11 and I think that is the minimum for Safari, but it 10.4 runs great on my Pismo with 384 MB of RAM as long as I don't use too many cool musical widgets and such!

X10 Insteon controller for OS9

I remember reading about x10 when OS8 was the new thing, so I am sure there's software that will do this -- what I am looking for? An old version of Thinking Home, or MouseHouse? Ideally, I'd like something FREE! Anyone familiar with this kind of software? I'd like to make a camper controller for my chevy van using one of the old 3400 powerbooks as the computer center. It would help us do things like monitor the fuel tanks, the auxiliary battery charging and usage -- maybe keep us aprised of the weather and temperature...

thanks

Browser cuts off left side - redux

In a blinding moment of clarity that I cannot explain in few words, I suddenly fiured out why I was having problems seeing the left side of many webpages I went to...

You see, I am running OS 9.2.2 on a Blueberry iBook. I am trapped at a resolution no greater than 800x600. I recall when I used to work with an application that had a web client and I recall that we had to set the parameters so that it would properly display on the monitors/systems with the lowest resolution. This is when it hit me that I must be visiting pages where the webmasters expect a resolution greater than what I can obtain. It is not a problem with my browser or my machine, but the solution may be there.

Is there some kind of stylesheet or some setting I can point to that tells my browser to scale down the webpage for a 800/600 resolution? I am running the latest (hacked) version of Mozilla on 9.2.2.

TIA

Simple PHP question (I hope!)

I'm going through a book on PHP and am on a chapter for dealing with MySQL database files. The first example goes through opening the database file and throwing an error when it can't do so. When I try to run it the server appears to stop interpreting PHP as PHP and displays the rest of the block as HTML. I would try to show it on here but the last time I tried the post was rejected.

It's similar to the first example listed on this page:

http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.mysql-connect.php

I have tried it on Linux, Windows, and Tiger with the same results. It's really difficult to try to learn something when you can't get the environment to work properly.

Rotate Display On Wallstreet PowerBook?

I've finally convinced my wife to give up her paper wall calendar in favor of using the calendar feature in Entourage, and am planning on putting an old Wallstreet at the stand-up desk in the kitchen (she was about this resistant when I tried to convince her to get an internet connection and email; now she can't survive without it.) Now I'm trying to figure out how best to mount the PowerBook so it's easily accessible but not in the way.

I found a post on Instructables (link) where a guy made brackets to attach a laptop upside down to the bottom of an upper cabinet. The display swings down for use, but it required something extra to rotate the displayed image. I'd like to do the same with the PowerBook, but I haven't been able to come up with a way to rotate the display on it.

The PowerBook is currently running 10.2, and the rotate display dohickey in the Displays Preference Panel was introduced with 10.4. Even if I hacked 10.4 to run on it, that feature is still disabled on PowerBooks -- won't work on my Aluminum G4 PowerBook at all.

So, the question is, is there a hack or 3rd party bit of software that can do this for me?

Key Remapping in WinXP?

This is probably going to sound a bit wacky, but here goes...

At work I use both a PC and a PowerBook, and have them set up using Synergy instead of a KVM switch (link to my blog). It's really pretty slick; the standard mouse and keyboard are connected to the PC, the Mac sits to the right of the PC's monitor, and when I push the cursor to the right side of the PC screen, mouse and keyboard control jumps over to the Mac. Very sweet!

But I needed a new keyboard, and was wooed by the siren song of a shiny new Apple Keyboard. Now that the Apple Keyboard is connected to the PC, everything works fine except the Command and Option keys are swapped. It's weird because with a standard PC keyboard in my setup, pressing the Alt key is equal to the Command key on the Mac; but because the Alt key on the Windows keyboard is in the same physical location as the command key on the Mac, it worked great for me.

So the keyboard is working exactly the way it should, but it feels backward to me. The standard keyboard commands have become so second nature to me that it just feels wrong to have to move one key over.

What I'd like to do is figure out how to remap those two keys so it works as it should. It would be great if I could modify only the driver for the Mac keyboard so that if another keyboard is connected it works as it should. Any PC guru's out there able to help out with this one?

Thanks in advance!

Re-installing OS 9 without an optical drive

I have been fooling with a bunch of OS 9 software off the web (I am downloading everything I can find before it is gone). Now I get a warning that my computer can't sleep because some system software is mising, please reinstall your system! Of course without a working optical drive I've got to figure something out.

I found an old copy of PC MacLAN and can access Mac volumes from the PC but can't seem to read Mac CDs. I was thinking of copying the OS 9.1 install CD to a USB flash card and seeing if somehow I could install from there to the Pismo.

I also found an old copy of Dave for the Mac so I could use the PCs and printers on our network from Big Z Boy, but it is also on a Mac CD, so that won't work either. Any =CHEAP= suggestions?
