is there such a thing as a scsi pccard reader for macs?

I thought that I remembered seeing a for-sale post somewhere on the internet for one of these a long time ago

I'm going to guess they're rare but I can't help thinking now of silly uses I'm sure you people could come up with for one of these on a 68040 macintosh :D

My CPU collection

Just thought I'd share a few photos of my collection of loose CPUs.
Mostly x86 stuff, but there's a number of 68040s, mostly from Quarda 610s, a 68030-16 and 68882-40, a strange TI DSP chip(can't even remember where I got that from) and an 8088.

Using mac and Windows XP - How to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro Edition

I have a client that bought a new iMac and Windows XP Home with SP2 to run on it and access her work computer. Now her work administrators tell her she needs the Professional edition of XP to access the Work network.

What is the cheapest and/or easiest way to upgrade XP Home to XP Pro? She already spent the $299.00 for XP Home. Does she now have to spend $99 (or whatever) to buy XP Pro Upgrade?

or can she get to Pro by downloading and installing updates from microsoft's website?

Thanks.

PowerExpress Revisited part II

I've reassembled my Powermac 9600 to begin a renewed effort at booting my PowerExpress motherboard which was first tried years ago when I first arrived at Applefritter and created this thread:
PowerExpress Revisited
That thread became a very long thread (maybe one of the longest threads at AF?), so I thought I'd create a part II thread to keep things short.

Accessing other password protected Windows XP accounts from another account.

Hello, my problem here is trying to access an account that my access is denied to. What I'm doing is backing up two computers, one boots up fine, the other locks up just at the beginning of bootup. I successfully backed up one of them, but the other, not quite done yet. Since I can't boot from the other, I had to connect the hard drive from that computer into another computer. When I did this, I noticed that an account might have a password, since it denies access when I try to open it. I know the password, since I've worked with this person before who gave me the two comps, but since I can't boot from that drive and can't login to that account, I believe I'm stuck where I am. Is there some sort of way to allow access by typing in the password through some sort of browsing application or what? If anybody can help me with this problem, that would be great. Thank you.

Network Guides or HowTo's

As I peruse the Intertubes, as well as deal with people in my daily job, I come across a lot of people who are simply looking for the most basic of networking instruction. Is there any interest here regarding this type of information? I'm just gauging response, as I have a number of "cut-and-paste" responses that could sove about 90% of the problems that most people run into when attempting to network computers.

And I promise not to turn it into a crummy commercial.

So, thoughts?

New AirPort Utility won't see Graphite Base Station

I just upgraded both my MacBook Pro and Powerbook G4 to 10.5 and noticed something strange. The new version of Airport Utility won't pickup my Graphite base station when it does a scan. Even when I'm connected to it with Airport or ethernet. Has Apple dropped support for it with this latest version? I could still work with it under 10.4, but not anymore. Anyone else have similar problems?

Parrelles connecting with Verizon USB modem

I am looking for any help that anyone could provide with the following problem. I am new to Mac and Parralles but have become fairly comfortable with both. The problem is this...the Parralles will connect to the Mac Airport with some assistance, but if I am not at a hot point, I have to use a Verizon Wireless USB modem. The Parralles will not connect to the device either by force or auto. If someone else has run into this and can provide a solution I would be most gratefull.

cleaning up a digitizer

Hey everyone. I just splurged on a fujitsu stylistic. The seller said the digitizer was mushy in some places, and even hilighted it in the pic. I see what they mean, it's difficult, but not impossible to press. I carefully took it apart, and removed the digitizer. I took a shop rag, and carefully wet it. There was some thin sticky residue in places, so I cleaned everything really well and carefully, and reassembled. I put in the original hard drive (the 40gb with windows 2000 I just installed got hosed, so I swapped in the original 6gb with windows 98SE). Upon booting, I did note the touchscreen was a bit more responsive, especially in the top area where it was almost dead, but along the upper right corner and side, it is still pretty hard to press.

This is one of those older liquid filled digitizers, where the pen is not required (as in the older ones it did since the pen took a battery). I did note there were some bubbles in the film, so I think it lost a bit of liquid, from what I have heard it is oil of some sort.

Does anyone know how to clean this up a little better, or even refill some of the liquid? if it uses just regular mineral oil, I have some of that, but would not know how to go about doing it.

Thanks.

ITunes Issue

I am fairly new to ITunes but I am having an issue when burning MP3 CDs in ITunes. I name all my music as Artist - Track - Song but when I burn a MP3 CD the music is burned as 001 - Song, 002 - Song, etc.... How can I change this to where it burns and keeps the track information exactly the same as it was originally named?

Thanks

Unusual Internet drop out problem..

Hey all,

Have quite an unusal problem with my server set up in regards to intermittent internet drop out's.
I'm running Microsoft ISA 2006 on one server which has a direct connection to the ADSL, and Trend Micro IWSS web filtering on another - have about 10 other server's (Citrix, and domain controller's etc) in the same farm also, all running Server 2003.
For some reason, the internet is dropping out for short period's of time on all other server's and clients except for the ISA server. Even stranger is all I have to do to fix the issue is open up IE on the ISA server which seems to refresh something as everything else works from then on. Have checked with the ISP - no faults found at all there. My IWSS and ISA seem to be running fine, although I have upgraded from proxy 2 recently.
Could something within ISA be causing these drop out's? Also, we have a 8Mbp's ADSL connection which provides for up to 1000 user's at a time - at peak times could heaps of traffic be causing the bomb out's.

Confused..

to anyone considering an sli-dual monitor setup

simply put it doesnt work. you have to disable sli every time you want information to be send to display #2. i am pretty peeved over this because nobody has ever mentioned it to me before and i just bought a second card to use sli. seems stupid to me that you have to loose estate for added performance. rumors of Nvidia fixing this with new gpu's surfaced 2 years ago and yet nothing has been done. anyone wanna buy an 8800gts?

WTB: 700-1GHz MicroATX Board, Integrated Everything

Long time no write, everyone. :) Have been reading on and off, and have a MacBook now, love it! But that's not the reason for my post.

I'm getting ready to brew up a low-profile, Linux-powered NAS for my little home network, and I'm looking for a 700-1GHz (ish) small, low-slung (Socket 370, etc) motherboard thats got onboard everything (video and LAN a must,) with proc, maybe a stick of RAM, but that's not really necessary.

I've crawled eBay, and it's insane to ship a machine with these specs for the value, and the 'boards themselves are priced rather high too. So I'm wondering, any of you hanging onto something like this and want to let it go for shipping to save it from the landfill?

Will be making a trip to the uni recyclers nearby, but with it being a 50 mile trip, not having to go would be great.

PM me with offers; note that I'm no peticular rush, but once a deals gotten set, I wont leave ya hangin' ;)

Recommendation for SCSI to USB connector for old G3 (9600/200 beige box) w/ OS 9.1

I'm looking for a SCSI to USB connector that will work on this computer. G3 has an Adaptec SCSI card.
I want to export files from G3 to outboard HD.

I've read the discussions about OS X and gotten some info pertinent to my situation.
Issues at hand:
1) OS compatibility
2) need for a power supply
3) need for drivers
4) SCSI connector format: 25pin or 50pin; male or female?

The Microtech XpressSCSI unit seems to be popular and may be workable for this G3 (?).
The Belkin F5U115-UNV has "termpower," which apparently eliminates the need for an outboard power supply.

Does anyone have recommendations for the G3 and the application?

Thanks very much.

PC detects network, but no connection.

I'm currently trying to fix a windows XP machine. It had Windows 2000 on it. The problem was that the computer was gaining any access to the internet. I tried some command prompt commands, it detected my router, had an IP of 192.168.1.110, I installed Windows XP w/ SP2, it still doesn't connect, I do virus scans, no viruses, I insert a new network card, still no connection, I insert a USB wireless, still no connection. I really have no clue what the problem with the machine is. I need some help. Thank you.
