Silicone Valley Taking Over the Drive Train Aspect of the U.S. Auto Industry

Just thinking how far the computer industry has come, in such a short time that, compared to Detroit, kind of tells you something.
Surely Apple if given the task of advancing battery technology could, within a fraction of the time that the Big 3 would take to develop a viable product. Most, if not all, cars already are computer friendly. To include the drive train would be a much better idea than to wait for the same group who just left Washington to produce an efficient product. The computer industry thrives on challenges, whereas Detroit has done very little, except for incorporating computers in their cars, in a very long time, and now they are looking for a hand-out. They should concentrate on body styles and tire valves. It is obvious, they can't make an efficient, durable vehicle.

AT&T 2Wire DSL meets Airport Extreme - Please help

Okay, I have a 2Wire modem and service through AT&T. I also have an Airport Extreme base station for a computer n the other room where I cannot run a wire nor support a wireless card.

I cannot get the two to talk to each other. I can go wireless from my main computer (G4) to the 2Wire DSL (by unplugging the DSL's ethernet connection to the G4. I can access the internet wirelessly from the G4. I can see and configure the Airport base station (albeit not while connected to the other wireless network). I have configure the base station to go WDS and have the MAC address from the 2Wire in there as well.

When connected to the base station (as a client), it indicates that the IP is self assigned and does not connect to the internet.

How can I get my base station to act as a repeater/slave/client of my 2Wire DSL so that my other computer can surf/

TIA

Problems installing on Newton

I've been trying to load some new software on my Newton 2000. I have a CD that came with my MP 100 with lots of Newton OS 2.x and 1.x software, and thats where I'm getting most of it. The problem I'm having is this. I'll unstuff the Package to install on the Newton. Using Newton Connection Utilities, I'll make my connection, but when I go to install the package, neither the computer or Newton will see it. If I have it on the desktop or wherever, the package simply won't show up. It has the correct ".pkg" extension and whatnot, but I cannot get figure out how to get it on my Newton. I tried changing the name and extension with no luck. I've even downloaded a copy of the same package online, and still no luck. The computer I'm using is a Powerbook G3 Wallstreet running OS 9.2 and I'm connecting through localtalk. Anyone know what the deal is and how I can make this work? I'm trying to install Quick Figure for Newton Works.

Problems with an Epson 900G on OS X.4.x

Got an Epson 900G printer (B&W deal) hooked to my G$ tower running X.4. The things stars off okay and the Epson Printer Utility can see it alright. Once i select it from the list of printers (only one there), I am taken into the printer utility. I usually get only one event from the printer before it goes comatose - I can check the status, or check the printer nozzles, or clean the heads, etc. Once I do this one and only one thing, the printer goes comatose. Sometimes the power light stays on (green), but usually, it just dies and will not power on for several minutes. The only symptom of a problem on the Mac is a communication error, even if the printer has a solid green light and appears ready to print.

One transaction, then comatose.

Printer has a good working history when used on a 9.2.x machine about a year ago.

Please help.

TIA

Dell LS400 LCD Problem

I have a problem with Dell latitude LS400 LCD. Initially the cable was damaged internally due to crack at the hinge joint as a result of loose hinge bolts and the screen turned white. I have replaced with another cable which seems to be okay (claimed by the seller) and I can see menu and desktop but the colors are blur but bright as before, I mean the there is no color rendering and the black areas appear to be purple. There are some fluctuating lines on the screen as well. In short the color smoothness is gone while text font is still crisp clear. When an external CRT monitor is connected the images are crystal clear. Is that still the cable or the inverter or something else?

What I suspect is the faulty inverter. By the way inverter steps-up DC to how much voltage and what kind of HV output signal is fed to LCD?

Senior citizens need a better unit than webtv

Does anyone know if there's a product on the horizon that is equal to or,hopefully, much better than MSN webtv? There are countless amounts of seniors who depend on this dated system which is constantly lowering it's standards and yet they keep the price the same. If there is a system out there, I'd love to know. I have so many friends who feel that could never learn to use a computer yet they could do more than they can on webtv. Anxiously awaiting any replies, thankyou, Sheila

Recommendations needed: inexpensive kids' camera

Our family will be heading to SoCal this summer for my sister's wedding. I'm looking for an inexpensive digital camera for my daughter, but I have a few questions that the Fritters are best qualified to answer:

• There are lots of variations available in the Disney KidPix line: Hannah Montana, Pirates of the Caribbean, Princesses, and the like. I know that a few years ago, reviews of Disney cameras on Amazon.com seemed to conclude that Disney cameras wouldn't work with Macs: no software, no iPhoto support, wouldn't even show up on the desktop. Is this still the case, or has Disney changed its ways now that Steve is one of the major shareholders?

• There are lots of other cameras available at places like Target or WalMart (don't remember the brand name) which specify Windows support, but make no mention of Mac support. Anybody have any experience with these bargain-brand cameras on Macs, either positive or negative?

• Nickelodeon has a line of kids' digitals, with Dora the Explorer, Diego and other characters, which specify Mac support, but they're three times the price of the KidPix line. Again, anybody have either positive or negative experience with this line?

• Can anyone recommend a particular inexpensive camera that they've used successfully with a Mac? Where might I purchase such a device? What kind of price range can I expect?

I don't particularly want to buy an expensive ($60 or more) camera for my eight-year-old, but I know it's easy to spend a lot of money, $20 at a time, on cameras that won't work. Looking forward to your comments.

How would you improve the iPhone ?

The first thing I would do it make it like the Voyager with a "Real Keyboard" not the on-screen chicklet keyboard is it horrible! Two I would make it so the camera could take video I mean comon a 2.0 MP camera needs more uses. Third is SMS and IM'ing I would make sure it has an onboard Instantmessenger and SMS should be able to send videos and pictures. I've been reading and the iPhone seems flawed in my eyes.

Why Doesn't Apple make a cheap upgradeable Mac ?

Recently after seeing the Powermac G5 Cube (Aka Ubercube) it made me think why doesn't Apple take that design but do amazing things with it. Like say component wise give it essentially the same I/O as the mini but give it 1 or 2PCI-E and 4x AGP Slot for expandability. As for drives give it a standard Combo drive then a Superdrive as an option. For the processor equip it standardly with a dual and you can get a quad as an option. Now I thought as for HD's why not use a 2.5" HD, but have two bays and an on-board powersupply. I mainly thought of using 2.5" HD's to reduce size. So why doesn't Apple have a cheap upgradeable Mac, and what do you think of my idea ?

Phone Suggestions for AT&T

My wife wants to replace her cell phone. She is using AT&T. I want to buy a phone without extending her contract like I did when I got my free phone from their website.

Anyone here that is using AT&T have any suggestions on phones to either run away from or models that are great?

There will NOT be internet on the plan
At least 1.x mega pixel camera
Texting is NOT important

So you can see, what she wants is great connectivity, sound and camera. That's about it.

Thanks!
