I have word and wordperfect documents on a system 7 machine that I will convert to pdf via printopdf. Can I embed the font information in the psf to preserve the layout cross-platform?

Printtopdf has a preference pane to select specific fonts and convert them to bitmap in the pdf, thus retaining the look of the original document. This will even work with Mac System fonts.
Your pdf will look correct on any platform, but the trade-off is without more advanced programs you lose the ability to manipulate that text (ie select/copy to paste into another document).
