Here's what I have:
one 1400c/117 that was running perfectly, albeit slow and with a kinda not so great screen (or a screen on its way out, it was faded and showed lines like a dual-scan, even though it was a 1400c and not a 1400cs. it also had case damage)
one 1400c/166 that was running perfectly with a bottom case that was beat to hell. untested screen that looked fine. LEM says that I can't just move the 166 processor over to the 117 so I moved the mobo too, essentially putting the nicer internal machine in the nicer external machine, putting on the untested screen and stealing the RAM from the 117.
long short of it: boots now to a rainbow screen: pixel width vertical lines that just stay there. there's an error tone after the normal start-up chime, but it sounds like it's fully booted behind the rainbow.
I checked the connections, checked the RAM...
anyone ever see something like this before? Hoping for a simpler fix that disassembly and starting over.
do those things have video out? if so, hook it to a monitor/TV. if the port is VGA, then it should be east. then, watch it boot on the monitor, and see what happens.

no video out without an add on that I don't have. that would have made it easy though. thanks for the suggestion.
i had one of those for a while and the same thing happened to me. the only way i ever found to fix the problem was to hit the sides of the screen with the palms of your hands untill it went away. i know its kinda a gruesome fix but it worked for me for about 3 years.

if it was the same problem and whacking the screen helped then the problem is probably in the screen itself. will make it easier to diagnose the problem at least.
thanks.
If you take the screen apart, you could try replugging the display cables into the LCD panel and see what happens.
