Now i realize that a 333mhz model lombard powerbook doesnt have support on the motherboard for playing dvd movies, only the 400mhz model does. i was reading online that when it was new you could get a 2x dvd drive with the 333mhz model. now my question is, even though the 333mhz model doesnt support dvd playback because of a lack of a onboard decoder. would a combo dvd/cdrw drive in a 333mhz model still allow you to install software off dvd's or not? i know you couldnt watch any movies, but i would think you could still install off dvds right or read ones with data on them?

I've been using a teac dw-224e in my lombard, taken from a toshiba laptop. It reads dvd-roms and cds fine; the only problem is that it can't be boot off of, probably some fault of the cdrom firmware
is yours a 333mhz model?
the drive does that. The problem with the 333MHz one is that the chipset is not designed to use the hardware DVD Decoder if it did not come with it. I think it has to do with the way the graphics chip is set up. I had a DVD drive on my 233MHz Beige G3, it read dvd's fine. Playback sucked. but the drive shouldn't matter now days.
I can even boot off of an LG DVD drive on my Beige, as well as my ibook with it in a case thru firewire. So, the drive is totally independant of the DVD Playback
I think the problem in the old days was that the ROM on the CD-Rom, or HDD had to have been programmed by apple. Hence the apple logos on the drive. These days, it doesn't matter. I think when the PPC systems came out, it was kinda done away with. I also think it had to do with SCSI too.
cool thanks for the help!
