problems with osx.3 on powerbook g3 lombard

i'm not sure on this, but i think you need an os 9 cd to do the firmware upgrade

..so i would have to go BACK to do that first?
i am confused why osx.2 would be fine..

i think u could just boot off an os9 cd and do the update from that

no you dont have to install os9. It should bring up a dialog box when you boot off the cd that uneeded to update the firmware.

The PowerBook G3 (Bronze Keyboard) doesn't need a FirmWare Update to run X as shown in the bottom of the link.

i am wondering what else it could be?

this is the order of events:

1. i obtained a reliable copy of OSX 10.3 and loaded it successfully on my ORIGINAL 4 gig drive.
2. decided to get a bigger hard drive when i saw how much space was used.
3. put in the bigger drive and attempted to load 10.3. almost through the install and it "crashed", the computer froze, the screen graphics went into lines and i had to start over.
4. ditto a bunch of times.
5. went to my friends house to use his CD version, assuming that mine had got corrupted. same thing happened
6. we attempted to partition the HD and see if that would work (erasing correctly, making sure it was in mac-extended etc). no joy.
7. we borrowed his girlfriends indentical powerbooks DVD drive (mine is CD only) and using a 10.2 installer were able to easily install 10.2
8. attempted to then upgrade to 10.3.
9. no joy. we get 90% though the install and the screen suddenly looks like its on acid, crazy colours as if the screen was smashed, then lines and the powerbook is frozen.

so here i am with 10.2 installed, wondering why i can't get 10.3 to load?
all indications are that i didnt really need the partition, and that i dont need a firmware update..and if 10.2 is fine, can it really be the hard drive???

You say you have a working version of Panther on your oder 4GB drive, that you just want a bigger drive. Try this:

1) Obtain a USB enclosure for your (larger) laptop drive. (Lombard has no FireWire, and IDK if you'll find a SCSI enclosure for an ATA laptop drive anywhere. Correct me if I'm wrong) Put the original drive in the PowerBook and the larger (target) drive in the enclosure.

2) Download SuperDuper (don't know the address -- Google it or private message me and I'll find it) and install onto the PowerBook (original drive).

3) Using Disk Utility, reformat the (now external) larger drive into HFS+ (with Mac OS 9 drivers). Use SuperDuper to mirror the 4GB drive to the larger one.

4) Remove the 4GB drive and put the larger drive back in the PowerBook. Reboot.

Worth a shot?

if you have an external enclosure for a laptop hd then you can use disk utility off the boot cd for panther to clone the hd onto the bigger drive. it will copy every thing over that way and ive done this before when i only had a dvd install of panther. by the way my lombard installs panther off the cd's just fine. maybe the cpu is failing or the system is getting too hot. does your cooling fan come on during install?

I'm having this same problem on my Lombard. I got a used 55gb hard drive i was going to drop in (the old one crashed hard one me). Now when I goto install OS X 10.3 my screen whites out of me! But I tried installing Ubuntu and I didn't have any problems. I thought it was very strange...

It could be the CPU over heating, but why would Ubuntu still install?

Did the 101's need to have that 8 gig first partition?

To fix the screen problem with X.3 install, remove the 256mb module from the top slot. I'll edit with links to the stories later, but it solved my problem.

thanks for help. sorry, been gone a few days busy.
the 4 gig wouldnt accept 10.3 when i tried again. read about the top slot issue with RAM and am going to try that first, as my powerbook DOES have the family number M5343 which other people had with same issue.
if that doesnt work i will try your suggestions.
i had even gone so far as to lift the powerbook on two books when installing and run an external fan to keep underside cool, but that didnt help. ha ha.

just kidding. Ubuntu is a new linux to hit the market that works on Both PowerPC and x86 Systems. it is a growing linux, so it is still in it's infancy. But it should allow you to partition your system.

If you want use Ubuntu to resize a Mac partition, read this thread on ubuntuforums.org for how to do it. Note that on OS 9 only partitions (non-Journalled HFS+ or HFS) you won't need to do the first steps where you turn off the journalling.

ok, after all the helpful responses i went with my first (and the easiest) choice:
i took out the RAM in top slot, and BOOM, 10.3 loaded like a dream...still updating so will see what happens when i put the memeroy back in ;-)
anyone else out there having maxed out the RAM and new HD in a Lombard having issues with 10.3 loading and the screen going trippy and crashing almost all the way through the install: try this first! its really simple and quick to do.
i couldnt have done it without this forum, as i have been searching for weeks to get this figured out, so thanks so much everyone.

my next question-
which PCMCIA wireless card can i use to get online that will work without me having to get additional drivers?
i will be running 10.3.8 (possibly 10.3.9)
and, is there a trick to configuring it that i need to know?

i have this card for my lombard but it does have additional drivers that you need to download but belkin has the drivers on thier website. if your going to get this though be sure to get version 3000 not any others.

ok, so checked the list, problem is, i know i need PCMCIA type, but what about "chipset". how do i know what chipset i have?

A Lucent ORiNoCO based card should work. They have a "Hermes" chipset, IIRC. The technology was sold to various companies who made OEM versions of the card, and even Lucent sold it off. Names might include Lucent/Proxim/Agere, etc. Try to get something like a Lucent or Proxim ORiNoCo Gold or Silver or an OEM based on the same card. Those are the same chipsets that are in the official Apple Airport cards.

I am having a similar issue with my Powerbook G3 Lombard.
I upgraded to an 80G hard drive and installing OS X 10.3.
The installation works perfect and I’m able to navigate with ease, but every time I turn it off, when I power it up, I get a prohibitory sign (circle w/ slash through)with a white screen. I’ve formatted by doing the erase, and it always works, but if I turn it off I won’t be able load the OS?
What am I doing wrong?

How did you manage to install Tiger on Lombard, I can't install Panther 10.3 on Lombard!!!

I tried taking out the top RAM memory card as a previous member said, but the Powerbook still freezes after I have selected English language at start of installation.

By the way, I don't have a DVD drive, do you need one for Tiger?

Hi, just adding another success report. I had the exact same symptoms as the OP, and googled my way here looking for a fix. Ironically, I had recently mentioned the RAM issue to a friend and promptly forgotten it. Anyway, removed the topmost 256MB DIMM and 10.3 installed without a hitch. I'm making this entry from my freshly upgraded Powerbook.
