10.2.8 driver problem

I finally got a copy of 10.2 and used it to update a copy of 10.1.5 on one of my Beige G3s without a problem, except for when I ran the updates for 10.2.8 and other stuff (Safari, Stuffit, IE security update, and something else pretty minor) to get it up to speed. Once it finished updating to 10.2.8 it crashed hard when I rebooted none of my mice work.

I have traced the problem down to a copy of Kensington MouseWorks (2.4 IIRC) I use for a nice 4 button mouse. And I can't seem to uninstall it. Its supposed to be good up to 10.3 but versiontracker has a few mentions of it messing up 10.2.8

I don't have the mouse works install/uninstall application on the hard drive except in .sit form and stuffit was in the middle of updating so the stuffit engine is MIA.

So any ideas on how to fix this? I can drop back to classic, update my backups, then do a clean install of OS X but I'm not a fan of that option.

Manual Uninstall

I think the Kensington MouseWorks drivers are just the .prefpane and maybe a program that starts up with the computer. The .prefpane would be in either ~/Library/PreferencePanes or /Library/PreferencePanes. You can just delete that in OS 9. Startup items are probably in ~/Library/StartupItems or some such. I can't remember offhand, and I'm not in front of my Mac right now.

No dice

I've dug around in the system files a couple times and deleted the stuff that looked like it was related to mouseworks and it didn't work. I tried sending an email to kensington support and I haven't recieved a a responce. I also managed to get the Mouseworks uninstaller but due to some catch-22 logic I need a mouse to uninstall the drivers that are preventing me from using a mouse.

Unless there are any other ideas I've got spring break next week (and a forcast of snow) so I'm going to try and get a spare HD, back up everything and reformat. Thats probably the better option anyways.

Huh...

It sounds as though the installer may have borked something in your system unrelated to things it was supposed to touch.

Have you thought about maybe

Have you thought about maybe using a different mouse (non-Kingston!) when the system boots up and seeing if then you can get past the point of whereever it crashes?

I know that when I have my logitech trackball hooked up to my mac, the logitech software recognizes it but it doesn't recognize or configure my apple brand or microsoft brand mice that I also have hooked up toi the computer at times.

Just an idea.

Tried

I've tried all of the various ADB mice I've got, none of them work under the 10.2.8 install with whatever remains of the kensington drivers

And its not crashing. I can boot up and use it just fine - as long as I don't need the mouse. Keyboard and everything else is recognized and functioning. It's as if the mouse was unplugged. It isn't a hardware matter - booting into any other OS install I can use the mouse just fine.

I don't know if you have a bu

I don't know if you have a bunncha spare parts like me, but do you have a pci usb card that you could then throw in there and see if the mouse works then? I don't know if that will actually "solve" anything but it might give you a clue.

And what about updating the kensington drivers to a newer version or even the same version now that you have 10.2.8 on there even though you can't use the mouse.

May be a problem with the mouse in general...

I had almost exactly the same problem upgrading my PowerMac G3 233 to 10.2.8. After the update, everything worked fine except no mouse! The only difference is that I am not using any sort of custom mouse - just the standard Apple Desktop Bus Mouse II (ADB.) This leads me to believe the problem you're having has nothing at all to do with Kensington and the things you've tried so far seem to support this.

Unfortunately, I've not found a solution. Have you made any progress? I've tried the usual ROM resets as well as PRAM zapping and such with no luck.

same problem

have the same problem - installed 10.2 on my beige g3, everything worked perfect untill i installed 10.2.8 -> mouse gone ... !!!
maybe it helps to install separate updates (not the combo) - i don't know if it's possible to get them anyway ...

no mouse

I had a similar problem problem, too. Beige G3 233 with 80GB hard drive and
192MB ram. I installed 10.2 and no problems. But when I did the software update and installed 10.2.8 mouse pointer was stuck in the corner. ADB mouse didn't work nor a PS2 one on a USB adapter. I could get the mouse back by holding shift on boot to get "safe boot".

Problem solved when I found a 128MB ram stick and installed it. Now I have 256MB and running well.

I'm using a slightly later ve

I'm using a slightly later version of mouseworks but they likely install the same files

a mouseworks preferencepane in Library -> PreferencePanes or in users-> yourname -> Library -> PreferencePanes

a com.kensington.mouseworks.prefpane.plist, com.kensington.mouseworks.plist com.kensington.mouseworks.prefpane.plist and com.kensington.mouseworks.plist in the library -> Preferences or in Users-> yourname -> Library -> Preferences

In library -> Application Support or Users-> yourname -> Library -> Application Support you'll likely find a kensington folder

I don't know if there's more but try getting rid of these
