a friend of mine works for some wealthy people and well they had this old gateway laptop that had windows 98 and got a virus. instead of just wiping it clean they bought a new one. They were going to throw this old one away but my friend asked about it and got it for me. its a SOLO 5300 cel700mhz/128/10gb/12.1/cdrw its not a bad machine, ive got a wireless card in it and seems to be just fine. for free its awsome. def needs more ram though. i was wondering if anyone knows of cpu swap outs for this machine? this model came all the way up to 1ghz p3.

Mainly it depends on the laptop. While some can use a chip like the ones you linked to, others use processor modules.

As an example, my Dell Inspiron 7500 uses a processor module. Currently it runs a Celeron at 466mhz, but it could go up to a Pentium 3-750mhz with the right module and enough cash.

i was actually wondering if someone knows what my machine has before i start tearing it apart after i just got it... the prices are right for some of those though :-) only thing i see wrong are the bus speeds, mine is 100mhz. if i put a 133mhz fsb chip in here it will either run slower or not run at all. as it stands it wont run with pc 133 or 66mhz ram. doesnt get past bios. but thanks for the link.

Depending on the paritcular m

Depending on the paritcular machine, bus speed dictates RAM speed, and either the CPU or processor module dictates bus speeds. Particularly on P3 machines. If you have a 100MHz-based P3/Celeron you'll need PC100 or PC-133 RAM. If you then swap up to a 133MHZ-based P3, you need to install PC-133 RAM.

i might as well forget about

i might as well forget about any upgrading for this machine. it took a dive off my bed lastnight cuz i fell asleep with it near me doing those stupid loooooong windows updates. the machine is ok but the poor pcmcia slot is gone now and so is my wireless card..... oh well it was fun while it lasted, but it was too slow anyways.
