I know, I need to clean it up a bit. I'll post one later of my pismo, as soon as I get OS X reinstalled.

DanDock

I dunno 'bout this 'image gallery' thing, I haven't the faintest idea how that works. Anyhow, here's my dock, though it's normally at the left it would be too tall so I moved it to the bottom for its beauty shot.

wow
I usually keep mine on the left too...
I gotta ask... why Windows Media Player, when VLC destroys it? And how often are you editing Hex? (a friend tells me real men program assembly... but I haven't touched it since I was a kid as it can get aggravating)

Also... next to iChat, what's the red dog head?... and next to that- I recognize it... used to use it but haven't seen it in a while. Oh yeah... rules 1&2, nevermind... (see PM)

What's between Darwine & Activity Monitor? DiskWarrior?

dankephoto's picture

re: DanDock

heh

The red dog is PitBull Pro, a Hotline client. WMP is . . . uhh, not sure why that's there, actually. Haven't used it in looong time, so time to take it out I reckon. Darwine? Nah, that's MacStumbler. Thingy to its right (before Activity Mon) is Street Atlas USA 6. Old but still useful.

A major theme here.

hotline... like... the batphone? I can't figure out what hotline is... either a cheesy teen thing, like late night tv commercials (call the hotline!), or perhaps some very useful VOIP tool that's customized to dial a single number??

Darwine? Nah, that's MacStumbler.
huh... hard to tell at that resolution... I bet that's what it is in other's docks too... I thought it odd that there were so many Darwine users... its not all that easy to use (yet).

now I see it... it looked like a brassy helmet at first, and now it doesn't... negative space is weird

Sorry, I never have figured out how to paste an image into a post. Thought I'd use this as the opportunity to learn, but I still couldn't get it. Someone clue me in.

Copy the URL to the image in your clipboard. Type "img" replacing the quotes with square brackets. Don't hit space, then paste the URL in. Then type "/img" with square brackets instead of quotes. Hit Post.

My turn

...with an obscure item or two.

Mac4D Tools runs the database application I use at work,
The flower icon is for OM Blue Player, an ambient music and sound generator,
Starfish, the amazing desktop background generator,
Cyberduck for ftp,
and Cisco VPN client for part of an ongoing experiment with my employer.

Dashboard is nowhere to be seen.

Kick Dock

I list the file names in my image gallery. The temporary items are not listed.

re: My turn

As my dock's absolutely bone standard, it's been instructive to see what you guys both download and deem useful enough to put into the dock.

eeun-
I looked at both OM Blue Player and StarfishX. Both are excellent programs. Got the ambient chillin' right now.

catmistake's picture

congrats

take a look at the right side of my dock, there's a grey globe, Apple's icon for share or mount or something... its actually just a folder that I changed the icon for, and dragged it into the dock, and in the folder are about a dozen alias' for shares. (just a suggestion, can squeeze your 4 globe-cubes into one... thought its not like you're hurting for space).

You copied the image's nodes URL. Copy the actual URL of the image and put it where Jon instructed.

Ok, to ask the stupid question: where is the actual URL of the image? I see that almost everyone else classified their uploaded image as "embedded." Was that important? Sorry to derail the thread for the moment, but I'm sure there's others out there as ignorant as I.

don't know if it makes a difference. I just right clicked, selected "copy image address" (in safari), and pasted what it copied inside the image tags. I think you need the raw image address, not the node number.

Yep, the address of the image

Yep, the address of the image itself, not the page that the image is being shown, is needed. As digital pointed out right click *over the image* and select "copy image addess" in Safari, or "Copy Image Location" in Firefox.

No, you're not missing anything; I just don't use the Dock much anymore. Quicksilver made it pretty much obsolete!

And if you're not familiar with Quicksilver, here is a link to a beginner's guide to using Quicksilver. Very, very powerful, very, very helpful software.

Try it. You'll like it! (and it's free!)

yes, keep the faith. I notice that your picture, at the moment, is the Mac OS 9 logo. Eye-wink

sum ray zens...

* Mac OS X 10.1.5 is what I've got, and it works well enough. less is more

* US$129 that I don't have to upgrade

* not sure how well an upgrade will run on a 500Mhz PowerPC dual-USB iBook

* I won't pirate software

You are right. Jaguar would certainly be an improvement.

as for performance, hell, i'm running 10.4.9 on a 400mhz G3, and it is very speedy. best $129 I ever spent.

I also ran jaguar for a month (version 10.2.Cool on my 233mhz 512k L2 wallstreet, and it was quite responsive.

amazingly, firefox 2.0.0.4 runs on 10.2.8. I am sure netscape will.

I'll confirm what digitalman says; I ran 10.2.x on a 233MHz beige G3 for a long time with great success. And that was even with 384MB of RAM in it! And 10.4.x runs fine on G3 machines, as does 10.3.x. The interface is far better than that on 10.1 or 10.2.

yeah, but I ran 10.2.8 on only 192mb of ram. really awesome how long you can use your mac. Never crashed on me once either.

oh yeah, it will be a while until I get my pismo working, but my dock is set up differently.

I am just waiting for someone to post a screenshot of A-Dock on OS 9. That would be funny.

Tiger good for G3

There are, apparently, a number of speed/usability enhancements in Tiger for G3 processors. I know its not the case, but I tend to think of 10.0 as an alpha, 10.1.5 as a beta, and 10.2.8 as a release candidate. 10.3.9 is mature, I think. But 10.4.9 is a little nicer (for slower machines, the bells and whistles can be turned off with some well placed terminal commands, see macosxhints.com).
