PC troubleshooting beyond me

I'm putting a computer together for a firend and I'm having a problem narrowing down the problem. first off I've built computers before and Know a lot but this is the hardest build that I've ever done.

I'm building a quad core comp and the problem I'm having is that No signal is coming from the GPU to the monitor. I thought it may be the gpu but I put that GPU in another computer and it works fine. Then I thought that the pcie imput on the motherboard was bad but I got a totally new board and the same problem. Now I think I have the problem isolated to the CPU. I don't want to assume thats the problem right away and I need a second opinion. Something that is weird which is delaying my hypothesis is that the motherboard doesn't beep at all. I even took the GPU out of it, no beep. I took the ram out and still no beep. Unfortunitly I don't have another quad cpu lying around to rule out the processor hypothesis. Power isn't an issue either I don't think because everything spins up (something that is kind of odd though is that the processor fan doesn't start spinning right away. It takes around 3 sec for it to start spinning. I think thats because the processor would have to get up to a certain temp before is started running).

Something I'm wondering also is, even if the cpu was bad wouldn't I still get a picture on the screen of the BIOS or something?

Maybe another seasoned comp builder has more information that would help me find my problem.

One thing that has got me a couple of times is having the power supply switch some how moved to 230V either by carrying it from one place to another or more likely a gremlin. I had fans spin but no beeps.

I want to think the CPU is the problem too. Usually you get a beep if the system works. However, as I have had a bum CPU before, I can say that the system will definately power up even if the CPU is dead. Just my 2¢

it sounds like to me tht its either the cpu or the power supply, do u hear anything spin up? like a hd?

I don't think it's the power

I don't think it's the power because everything spins up, hd and all. This is what I'm running

500w power supply

MSI NX8600GT-T2D256EZ GeForce 8600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor

PNY XLR8 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard

Sata hard drive and a keyboard

I don't think that those items would be more then the powersupply could handle.

Could be RAM.

It could possibly be bad RAM. I've dealt with bad RAM problems many times. This is something that could possibly happen if the RAM is bad.

I had a computer with a bad C

I had a computer with a bad CPU and the screen showed nothing, no post, etc.
It may be something else, but the CPU is a possibility.

No video

You might check the monitor. I have on rare occasions run ito a compatability problem with some monitors and video cards. Try a different monitor or LCD. Ya never know it might the cure

Motherboards should have bett

Motherboards should have better redundancies because finding out whats wrong shouldn't be a guessing game, and only fixed through trial and error.

I've mailed the CPU back and another one should be here within the week. I'll keep you posted.

same problem cant figure out

i am building a computer with an amd x2 6400+ and got her all put together and you can tell bios is running in the computer but nothing is going to the monitor. i tried a different monitor and a different video card. when the computer is turned on i plug the monitor in and the monitor wants to go to sleep and then i unplug it and no signal and keep plugging it in and both monitors wanted to go to sleep immediatly. i believe bios is running because to turn the computer off you have to hold in the power button to turn off instead of turning off immediatly as soon as you hit power button. not sure how old this page is but hopefully someone is reading and hopefully can help

Does the system have onboard

Does the system have onboard video? If so, with an AGP or PCI-E video card the BIOS doesn't always automatically route video through the card. Try connecting the monitor to the motherboard's onboard video port and see if you get anything. If yes, then change the BIOS setting for default video output.

would the onboard be the same connector as the video card. i am using pci-e on a MSI k9n4 sli with only one video card at the moment. it turned out that my buddy had the same mother board so we sat the two cases next to each other and compared his running computer to my new computer. i tried to use his video card and had the same problem. he didnt have that problem when he put his together. only difference was he put two video cards in at first instead of one. would the onboard connector be the same connector as the video card? because i cant find one on the board or on the back panel.

just a quick shot in the dark here, clear the CMOS or take out the battery. ive seen times where that will keep a computer from booting.
