Apple //GS just boops

Ah, but it's a lovely "booop," isn't it? It sounds as if its ready to go. Have you plugged it into a monitor (plain old RCA video out - hook it to any contemporary TV or VCR...)?

It has some value - you could probably get $10-$20 for it on eBay. Or you could build up a real system and get hooked like the rest of us.

What I think of a minimum Apple IIgs system is:

A Small Box of 3.5 and 5.25 inch floppies.
A Color IIgs Screen.
One 3.5 and 5.25 inch floppy drives.
IIgs, IIgs Keyboard, IIgs mouse.
Manuals and books to learn to program and learn about your system.

AND:

Love your Apple!

That's some minimum stuff. If you really want a good system.

You can do a lot of things with an apple like this. There is so much software out there, that if you bought some on ebay, you would spend hours and hours on these things.

Once you have the Minimum and you have a pretty good handle you can start thinking about expansion. Hard Drives, CFFA Drives, updating from ROM01 to ROM03, Bigger RAM, and several other good things.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am certain, someone, and probably someones, starting out on Apple II will find this thread, take your suggestions, and have that ball.

At the risk of being banned for good from this forum and having my house torched, I must confess, the Apple IIgs went to the landfill. I had to accept the fact that I could not afford another computer project. I've got enough for one person now and my time seems to get squeezed tighter and tighter the older I get. I put it out early by the road on top of a Mac Classic that was dead for the monthly bulky item trash pickup hoping someone would snatch it up. The truck actually passed without collecting that month (didn't notice it behind a parked car, I'm assuming), so the two machines sat there for more than a month with no takers, which surprised me, until the next month's collection. I did sell the memory card on eBay to a buyer who was very pleased with it, so at least a part was passed on to the right person. The IIgs was just a little too big to fit into a USPS Priority Flat Rate box, so I didn't bother trying to auction it off, or even give it away. The shipping charges would be more than buying one with shipping off someone else on the mainland, and I really thought someone would snatch it up off the side of the road. A thousand pardons.

I for one will not ban you. There are priorities, and then there are priorities. The one thing I will say is that you may have gotten a relatively good price for both your gs and the Mac up on eBay. Even for repair parts. I have bought second (and third) machines just to get the motherboards and cards. Some day; the spare parts companies will rule the Apple II world. I would like to be there when it happens. lol

Well, maybe some day you will reconsider and get back into it.
