Anyone want old servers: DEC VAX, IBM AS/400, HP K-class PA-RISC

Well I'm intersted in the SCA drives or whatever they are in. I have lots of standard scsi drive but no SCA (SCA are the ones with the single plug on the drive that carries the voltage, right? I think SCA doesn't have a separate power connector).

I need some for my sparcstation and other projects (i have a 2U rackmount case with 4 hot swap slots for SCA drives.)

The only reason I got my Netserve is that I need one (or two if I find another HD bracket) to replace the dying 2.5 GB drive that came in my SS5. I've also got two SCA->68&50-pin adapters so I can make use of at least 4 of the drives. If I don't leave any in the HP I'll have two spares available for fairly cheap. If I make another trip with more money I can score several more drives.

I also saw that several of the HP K-class machines have multiple 4.5-9GB drives and slot-load DVD drives in them. I'm very sure that they are SCSI. I dunno what I'd do with the rest of the 5' tall tower though. I don't have a datacenter to stick one in or the money to pay for the power bills...

The AS/400 is a 9406. S.E. sold an s390 recently. It came from the city of Overland Park, and still had some life left in it's service contracts. It is most likely quite well worth something in the 6-figure range. They sold it to a guy for about $8,000 IIRC. If he gets that turned around, he just made 5 years+ of my paycheck... On an $8k investment.

I am interested in an HP K-class PA-RISC. I am also interested in HP NetServers. I assume this would be local pickup only. Where are you located?

From what I've seen in there they have a 6000-410 and a 6000-610, several tape drive cabinets and drive arrays. I know very little about VAXen, but what they have is real server-room grade stuff. Not a single micro-VAX in the bunch ie. you need a truck to haul these things and a 20 amp circuit to run them.

Local pickup would be the way to go for these things unless one wanted to contract a freight hauler or hire me to drive my pickup across the country. The machines are being sold by surplusexchange.org, in Kansas City, MO. If you know anything much about Kansas City, S.E. is in the West Bottoms near Kemper Arena. While they ship stuff to Iowa and Florida for recycling and a few other places, but I don't think they do much hauling out of town and most sales are local. Theyh do have docks for trucks and forklifts, so getting equipment loaded isn't too much of an issue.

Even the HP Netservers are huge? I figured they would me smaller thatn the rest. I live in Milwaukee, WI...so it wouldn't me that far of a drive ;~) Let me know.

well, i don't need complete servers, but i'd love to get some of the old, washing machine sized hard drives, or rather the voice coils from them, the really big ones you need both hands to lift. i have a couple of projects i'd like to try them out in including a servoed subwoofer with a very large cone or just bolted to the floor and moveing a large mass (think earthquake!). of course i'm in wyoming, so shipping will be an issue. if any one has one of these laying around (or even a couple of them) i'd definately be interested as soon as i have any money or if i have something you'd trade for. thanks, this is an interesting group and things like this almost make me want to live in california, or at least visit it with a truck and some cash to go surplus hunting! needless to say there aren't any great high tech surplus places near wyoming, at least none that i know of.

The Netservers are a box the size of a 19" monitor or a little bigger. I didn't enjoy carrying mine to the truck, and I lift heavy stuff all day for work. (80lb sacks usually)

I saw what I assume to be some IBM washing machines, but they had "sold" signs on 'em. Molst of what I saw were drive arrays for 3.5" RAIDs. Those DEC tape reel boxes have some good size tape heads on 'em...

I'd love to get my hands on a decent sized RAID array. What are the specs on them?

I was in there late last week. All the VAX machines were sold to a guy who drove out from New Jersey. I think he really liked the price they gave him for 4 VAX 6000 machines. He felt that $150 each was well worth the drive halfway across the country. They also gave him a TU-78 tape unit for free. They have a few of the tape units left, and several of the HP K-class and the IBM AS/400. The entire second building is being cleaned out and redesigned per the Big Boss's request. Too many people were opening systems and pulling and/or stealing components. They sell the SCA SCSI drives out of those at $20 each... $20 x 6 > the $50 price even if they bought one unit. Apparently there are buncha fools who don't know Surplus Exchange sales math. Buy more, pay less. Buy even more bigger stuff, pay even less.
