Plug computer into network using a crossover cable

Hi All,

I need to plug an AMD64 system into a standard network. Unfortunantly, I only have a spare cross over network cable. Am I correct in thinking that the computer network adapter will automatically compensate for this. Its a Nforce3 ultra.

If not, then I will have to do some surgery to the cable...

really, the only way to tell is to just plug it in. If windows/linux detects that the connection has become established (i.e. it reports that it is plugged in.) so, it won't hurt to do it. Most ethernet ports these days have the auto-crossover built-in as it is cheap to do, and people are getting used to it on laptops. The Ti and dual usb ibooks were the first of the apples to include it. Now all of the machines do, including the G5. So, just plug it in and if you have a light on the port, it will light up. If it is wrong, it won't light up.

And, depnding on the hub/switch arrangement you could just plug it into an uplink port if one is unused. It won't help your case ATM, but there are simple crossover adapter dongles available that convert a regular ethernet cable to crossover, and I'm sure would convert a crossover to regular. Having one in your travel pack o' goodies would be a nice idea.
